How much does your 14mth old sleep - during the day and night?

I wondered how much sleep other 14 mth olds are getting for their daytime naps and at night.
My dd (14 mths) naps for about 30-45 mins in the morning, and sometimes another 30 mins in the afternoon, then sleeps for 11 hours at night..
I'm worried that it's not enough?

My dd (12.5mths) sleeps 12 hrs at night (7pm-7am)
45 mins am (9.45-10.30) and 2 hrs pm (1pm-3pm)
This can occasionaly vary, eg, when ill or teething, but generally she does stick to this routine.
I also look after a 14mth old, who sleeps around 11.5 hrs at night (7.30pm-7am) and 2 hrs during the day (1-3pm) I must say though that she does quite often seem to be overtired to me, but this is the routine her parents want her to stick to.
I think you just have to be guided by your dd, does she seem ok with this amount of sleep? I suppose it just varies from child to child.

My ds is 13 months and he sleeps for about 15 - 16 hours in every 24. 12 - 13 hours at night and then 2 - 3 hours at lunchtime.

I think what is 'enough' varies enormously. In my postnatal group some babies only nap for 1 hour total during the day and don't appear cranky. My ds just happens to be a baby who likes a lot of sleep and if he doesn't get it he is very miserable. Mind you he is like a dynamo when awake.

I have to say that a long lunchtime bath with a magazine or book is my guilty pleasure so I'm not looking forward to when he reduces his lunchtime sleep.

Our dd (14 months) sleeps 12 hours at night and between one and two hours in the day. As happymum says this is subject to illness etc.

kinderbobsleigh · 13/12/2004 23:50

My ds did exactly the same at that age. He now (21 months) has a middle of the day nap for 1-2 hours and sleeps for 12 hours at night.

jabberwocky · 14/12/2004 00:31

ds at 16 mos sleeps 10 hours at night and takes one nap in the afternoon for 2 to 2 1/2 hours.

joashiningstar · 14/12/2004 00:35

GS did the same at that age. He still sleeps for 12-14 hours at night and has between 1 and 2 1/2 hours in the day. Although he has started protesting if he's tired in the day and I try putting him to bed before he asks. He's 2 on sunday.

Thanks for all your comments - useful, but a little worrying to see how much other 14 mths sleep. My DD does seem okay on the amount of sleep she has. I do have terrible trouble trying to stick to daytime nap routines as DD No.1 is at pre-school and has various clubs/lessons so we are constantly on the go most days. Trouble is she goes to bed quite early (they both do), 6.30 - 6.45 pm as they are both knackered by then, but consequently are early wakers - 6am is the norm..!

Mincepiemama - My ds2 sleeps for 11 hours at night and no more than 2 hours after lunch (if that), with no morning sleep.

I think it is much harder ensuring that second children get the sleep they need as they are always on the `hoof' after first child iyswim.

Yesterday my DD woke up at 6am, had a 40 min sleep at nursery, went to sleep at 6.45 but was awake again from 9.30 til 3am.
Though this is at the bad end of the spectrum, she doesnt sleep much at all and always wakes in the night.
I need a 10 hour stretch myself and am wondering how I spawned such a (very much loved ) creature.

Blimey 5goldendillydallys - I thought mine was a bad sleeper!!! Is your DD 14 mths too? What do you do with her between 9.30 and 3am???
I've just taken out a book from the library today about non-sleeping children - I'll let you know if it's worth a read.
My DD woke at 6am today, and also slept 45 mins late morning, and not had another nap. She is surviving, just! and will be in bed by 6.30 pm with a little medicine to help her on her way to sleep kingdom as she has a cold and is teething...
I too need my sleep and end up going to bed v. early to catch up.. not much fun for either myself or dh!!!

She is 16 months and in the middle of the night I try ignoring her, rocking her, trying her with juice and finally just getting up as I acn't stand it any more. I have been tempted to dope her up with Medised but so far am being restrained.
She is a little madam. there is no point going to bed early if she wakes up. Please let me know any good tips from the books but I have read Gina F et al

5goldendillydallys - have you tried the "checking" method of trying to get her back to sleep? We had awful probs with DD as she relied on a bottle in her cot to get her off to sleep and was waking every 2-3 hours in the night and taking ages to settle. Now we let her settle herself when she first goes to bed (no bottle), check her every 5 mins if crying - no eye contact, no lights, no talking, then leave and go back in after 5 mins if still crying and so on...every 5 mins until calmer, or quiet.
Now she still wakes in the night but after about 3 mins of crying mostly settles herself back to sleep, and we only intervene if the crying continues or sounds as if she is in trouble (sometimes arms caught in the bars of the cot or head up against the top of the cot)...

BUT, she still wakes v. early in the morning, sometimes 4.30 am and is difficult to get back to sleep then, and it's harder to do the "checking" thing then as we are conscious she may wake up DDno.1. Sometimes give her a beaker of milk, sometimes it works and she goes back off for another 1.5 hours, sometimes it doesn't and she spends another hour crying until we get her up!

lisalisa - very comforting to know that your dd sleeps more or less the same...

my ds is 14m. bed by 7pm. sometimes wakes at 6am, sometime s at 7am. I never have to wake him up! usually has a 2 hour kip 12.30. tody he only had just over an hour though so I put him to bed at 6.30 as he was shattered. am wondering now if that means a 5.30 start tomorrow! my freinds son at 18m sleeps more than12 hours a night plus 2 or more in teh day so I guessthey are just all differnt. sorry not to be mroe help.

janeyjinglebops · 14/12/2004 19:20

My ds 13 and half months, sleeps 12-13 hours at night and about an hour in the morning and 1-2 hours in the afternoon.

About 15 hours in total

janeyjinglebops · 14/12/2004 19:22

think I am lucky though as it can be longer. On Sunday I went and woke him up at 9.35 in the morning!!!

Thought it was getting a bit late for his breakfast.

PS.. DD woke at 9.15 am.
