9mo sleep regression - advice & thoughts please

Hi, I’ve posted re sleep before and got some good tips, plus it’s nice to hear from other parents who can relate.

My BF 9.5mo is usually an ‘average’ sleeper, we had to work very hard to get him to go down on his own at around 4 months then we briefly got to 1-2 short wakes a night which for me was amazing.

In the last couple of weeks he’s been crying when put down, so is patted & shushed to sleep, as well as waking sometimes every hour, screaming while standing in his crib. I know this is developmental & probably a bit of hunger or thirst due to the heat.

I try to only feed him every 2 hours minimum and the rest of the wakes my partner or I comfort him back to sleep. Twice I have taken him out of the crib altogether at about 4am as all efforts are fruitless. He has white noise on & black out blinds. 0.2 or 0.5 tog sleep bag with nappy or vest.

He naps once or twice a day, probably getting 1.5 hours a day on average, last wake window is always at least 3.5 hours. I think we are close to dropping the second nap entirely but that’s impossible when his days start before 6am. We put him to bed at 730pm so a 6am start or later would be perfect, he has always been quite low sleep needs I believe.

I’m not sure what I’m asking for really - can anyone tell me if they’d do anything differently? I’m aware this will pass but I don’t want to cause any negative associations.

Thanks if you got this far!

Hi mama,

no advice at all - I’m so sorry! 😂 but I just wanted to say my 9 month old is exactly the same and I was reaching out for the same reason.

So no tips from me I’m afraid but I’m going through the exact same thing so hang in there! We can do this!

Feeding every two hours seems a lot can you stretch it out to every four hours to get your baby used to longer periods between food? Also a big dream feed?

Youre right - I think I meant no more th an every 2 hours, in this heat he’s been ravenous and will not stop screaming until he’s fed, it is usually 3/4 hours throughout the night. Last night was 11pm then 4am (when he was up for the day).
Dreamfeeds used to wake him up when putting back in bed but I’m going to have to try again, didn’t even think of that, thank you!

In a similar boat with my 9 month old. Her awful sleep started around 7.5 months and I thought it was the 8 month sleep regression starting early but we're still here at 9 months and it's torture!! Last night I slept on my daughters bedroom floor with her as she wiggles around too much for co sleeping now and I'm worried she'll crawl out of bed. She usually wakes around 4-5 times a night and nothing seems to make any difference. I used to be able to feed her back to sleep but that rarely works now. Just wanted to say no advice but here in solidarity!

Oh my baby was thw prefct sleeper until 8 months, then I got a sleep consultant which was a game changer. She gave me a new routine and we did gentle sleep training.
Wake at 7am
Nap 9.30- 10.00 (half hr max)
Sleep 12.30 - 3.00 (wake by 3.30)
Sleep at 6.30/7.00pm
Fay slept affects night sleep, and if they are overtired or undertired they won't sleep properly at night.
Also did gentle sleep training, a variation of Ferber method leaving baby for 3min max.
Consistency is key.
Also baby slept in own room, I found sleeping in the same room seemed to be distracting.
Don't feed any red meat at night as that can affect babies digestion and disturb them.
Good luck!

Oh and that first nap shouldn't be dropped until about 18m. I think you can't help a regression anyway, but it might be the nap being dropped that's also causing an issue
