Getting rid of a dummy

We have hit 4 month sleep regression time and my LO won't sleep more than 45 minutes in the day and is waking way more over night (I am keeping him 4 hours between feeds, if he was earlier I try and re-settle before feeding).

Has anyone successfully got rid of the dummy and how long did it take them to self settle? I got rid of the dummy last week and it was an absolute battle, but then he got sick so I've had to give the dummy back so he can get some rest. Previously I could pop a dummy in, get him drowsy and pop him in bed and he'd go to sleep. Without a dummy I cannot get him drowsy and he will happily scream in bed despite me going back and reassuring him. We are also fast approaching having to remove the swaddle, which is a whole other issue because he won't sleep even with one arm out 🙄

Any tips or ideas welcome! As I'm going to try removing the dummy again once he's well.

So you want to take away your baby's comforter? Shove a few in the cot and they will be able to pop it in them self soon..

Why do you want to remove the dummy?

Hi @BritInNZ , sorry to jump on your post, just wondering whether you managed to get rid of the dummy and how you did it?
I'm currently going through similar with my 4.5 month old, having to replace the dummy multiple times a night. And he's also now started pulling it out with his hands and then screaming because he can't replace it. I feel like we would all get a better night sleep once we've weaned him off the dummy!

Hi @sophieea how did you get on? I’m in the exact same situation with my 4.5month. So tiring having to pop the dummy back in multiple times a night! I’ve read on here that a lot of people go cold Turkey at months but not sure I can take another 6 weeks of it!

6 months*

Hi @Spiderpiglet , sorry I’m not going to
be much help my boy is currently 8 months and still has his dummy. I can say that it does get easier after a few weeks (I know it feels never ending when you’re in the midst of it!!).
We had a couple of failed attempts of going cold turkey but I didn’t have the energy or patience to persevere with it - there were a lot of tears!
I started putting the dummy in his hand so he could practice putting it in his mouth himself and since he got the hang of that it’s been fine. I just put multiple dummy’s in his cot now so he can find them in the night. I only have to go and replace them if he manages to throw them all out of the cot, which doesn’t happen very often.
I hope this helps a bit, it does get easier, it’s just a (very frustrating) phase!

@sophieea sorry for the very delayed response! Just to update the thread - I did get rid of the dummy. I went completely cold turkey and replaced it with a comforter. Hasn't had a dummy since. Started sleeping through the night from 8.5 months old, although he still likes to keep me on my toes!
