10month old WILL NOT NAP.

Suddenly, this week he’s decided he doesn’t need naps. Won’t contact nap, sleep in his cot, in the pram, next to me in bed, car…I’ve tried literally everything.

Today, he’s had a grand total of 10mins in the car at 12pm after waking at 6:30. He’s been screaming and crying now on and off since that ‘nap’ - too tired to play, been on a walk and he looks like he’s about to drop off then screams again, not been able to do anything with him. It’s driving me mad. I’m on my own all day and to not have even half an hour to whizz round the house or eat something has been a killer.

Nighttime sleep has been generally okay, usually wakes for a bottle anytime between 12-3 and then sleeps til 6 or 7. The last few nights he’s been having a little cry around 10pm but has settled himself within a minute or two.

Any ideas?? I assume it’s developmental and he’s not ready to drop to one nap as he’s so so tired.

This morning was a 4:30 wake up - he’s had about 9.5hrs of sleep all yesterday!

any advice at all very much appreciated!

Not really any tips as if myDD doesn't want to nap then there's no changing her mind, however if it helps my DD goes through a few days of this then back to normal, she did it this week and then Thursday she fell asleep at 5:15, woke for about 10 mins around 8pm then went back until 5 the next morning! How does he normally nap? I know sometimes it does help my DD drop it if I just lay on the sofa with her with her programmes on and she will eventually give in. It's a nightmare isn't it because like you've said they then start crying because they're so tired! X

My daughter can get like this if she is coming down with a bug. Maybe a dose of Calpol might help just in case he has any pain from teeth or suchlike?

Werewolfnotswearwolf · 10/06/2023 07:41

Ahh thank you, I’ll keep my fingers crossed! He’ll nap on his dad on the sofa but with me he’s just pull himself up and lick my face and giggle 🙄 then the overtired crying sets in and the whole day becomes bedtime!

hopefully, like everything else, it’s a (very short) phase…

He’s just recovered from chicken pox but wasn’t too ill and actually sleep patterns didn’t change much - wonder if that’s contributing too?

I went through a phase of having to keep driving to keep my first asleep in the car. She wouldn't nap in the pram at that point (went back to it later), never ever in the cot and only if driving but would wake as soon as I stopped. She was 15 months at the time and didn't go down to one nap until 18 months so it was definitely developmental and not that she grew out of two naps.

But illness, teething, change in routine and weather etc can all impact on this.

When my two had chicken pox their sleep went to pot for a few days, so maybe it's just the tail end of that, OP.

Calpol!

@MeinKraft 😂 we’ve been through bottles of the stuff with various nursery-bourne diseases, I feel like the local co op night stop selling it to me!

Just to update you all he napped beautifully on his dad for an hour and a half this afternoon. I’m clearly too much fun.

Isn't that just the way! And I bet you used that time to rush round doing housework while Dad got to chill and watch TV 😄

Werewolfnotswearwolf · 10/06/2023 20:11

@YouAndMeAndThem I took the chance to go for a run and even managed to have a shower and wash my hair before he woke up! (The house is still an absolute tip 😂)

I’m back - it’s got worse and I’m losing the will to live.

Today, he woke at 4:45 after sleeping from 10 (amazing!) aaaand - has not napped since. Had 20mins in his cot, woke screaming half an hour ago and I’ve been battling to settle him again since. I genuinely am all out of ideas.

I can’t get him up and just crack on the the day because he’s screaming so much because he’s tired. I’ve tried putting him down at his normal times and then getting up after half an hour, quiet play, trying again.

my whole day off has been lost to bedtime.
