6mo hourly waking

My 6mo had started waking hourly at night.

I thought it might be teething, but his teeth erupted over a week ago, maybe two. Starting solids, but that’s been going on a good few weeks now. Growth spurt? But the sleep issues have been getting worse and worse for the last few weeks.

I’ve slept in the spare room for months as his noisy sleeping keeps me awake, but he slept in the snuzpod in the same room as my partner. He’s been in his own room for about a month, which started off great and has gradually gone downhill until now when we’re getting hourly wakings all night long. Paracetamol and ibuprofen have no effect, and he doesn’t seem like he’s in any pain during the day anyway. We tried just in case. Sometimes it’s taking an hour or two to get him back down, he’s often squirming around on us as we’re trying to get him back to sleep and wakes up. Often waking up right after we’ve put him down. It’s really bad.

The only thing I notice is that he coughs sometimes and slightly runny nose. He had covid about 4 weeks ago but it was over very quickly and sleep has been getting worse and worse since, even though the cough and runny nose has gotten better, and that sort of thing didn’t seem to bother him before. Doesn’t really seem like it’s that that’s bothering him now, in all honesty.

Desperate for ideas about how to help him, what it could be? otherwise we will have to sleep train. It’s unbearable.

To add, he used to be really good, waking only once or twice a night. A bad night would be more like 4 wake ups. If it’s a ‘regression’ it feels like it’s going on too long and just getting worse and worse. He’s been rolling for a couple of months and sitting for a month as well. Yesterday he did two 1h30 naps. Try to get naps as good as we can but they do tend to be a bit all over the place… could that be it? If it’s naps we need to sort then we need to sleep train anyway as they’re so inconsistent and unpredictable.

Hey OP, I am in a very similar boat. We have now had about 8 or more weeks of hourly waking and my husband and I have been on our knees.
We have actually booked an appointment with a paediatrician to get her checked. GP can't find anything. If there is nothing wrong and things don't improve soon we may try some gentle sleep training.
You have probably tried all these things but these are things we have done..

  • got her ears checked (she's had 2 ear infections previously)
  • good bedtime routine
  • tried waiting a minute or 2 before we go in
  • trying to settle her without dummy (but we are too chicken to take it away completely at the mo!).. in our case we aren't sure if the dummy is causing the problems
  • getting as much milk into her in the day as possible
  • porridge and banana at tea time
  • putting her down awake

I hope things improve for you soon but please know you're not alone. The GP has advised me that my DD is at 'the extreme end of normal'.

Xx
