daytime sleep for a one year old?

My dd is just shy of 1yr. Until 2 weeks ago we were in a loose routine that worked for everyone:
30-45 minutes nap somewhere between 9 and 10

90mins-2 hours somewhere between 1-2

bed 7-7.30

up for the day 6-6.30

DD now wants her am nap at about 10.15, then another nap around 4.30, which puts bedtime at about 9pm. As I work 3 days, I really need the evenings to get ready for the next day!

I've tried not having an afternoon nap - she's far too tired.

She gets really cranky if we try and miss/delay the morning nap, and also will drop straight off in the buggy if we're out.

Today I'm going to wake her after 15mins, but she'll no doubt not thank me for that .

any ideas on establishing a better rough routine that works for us?

thanks

maybe she is getting a little hungrier and needs some more/earlier food to allow her to want to go to sleep ealrier in the afternoon

i have same problem,ds2 is on on wednesday and his routine has changed exactly the same,i end up with a screaming child come 6 because he is so tired and i try to keep him awake

CatIsSleepy · 18/02/2008 12:14

hmm maybe not exactly comparable but my dd dropped her morning nap around 18 months
she wasn't wanting to go to sleep at 9 any more and i found that if she had a nap much later in the morning it interfered with her post-lunch nap so that she was way too tired in the afternoon or wanting another nap really late on
you may find a really short am nap works
tbh i didn't really find a good solution-I just dropped the morning nap altogether so that she would have a really good sleep after lunch
it took her a little while to adjust (probably a few weeks actually) and yes she was extra tired in the morning
I started giving her her lunch a bit earlier and getting her into bed by 12.30 if need be
she will still sleep in the morning if we do a longish car journey and she is 22months now

yes, we are in the process of changing naps too.
ds is 13 months in 2 days, and used to sleep 10-30 - 11.30 then 3.00 - 4., but has recently been refusing his afternoon nap or having one byt waking earlier.

so I am pushing for
7am wake
12.30 nap - 2
bed at 7

in the meantime he is sleeping at 11.30 - 1 then a quick 30 min catnap at 4.30.

I am going to slowly push the main nap forward and phase out the catnap.

Could you drop the 9-10am sleep and have one large day sleep from 11am? that's what i've started. DS can make it to 11am then i put him down for 3 hours, he then gets up at 2pm, bed at 7pm. he gets up at 6.30/7am.

oops sorry to post twice

PerkinWarbeck · 18/02/2008 12:27

thanks everyone! I'm sorry to hear others are in this quandry too.

Cat, that sounds exactly like things here, with the whole routine shifting to really late in the day if the morning nap is late. I might try and push DD's nap to 11am. with any luck she might sleep until 1pm, which I reckon would see us ok until 7pm.

Just really not looking forward to the crankiness .

xp Bertolli! I think you might have the solution, but DD gets mighty miserable if kept up. We won't be able to leave the house after about 9.30 either, as DD cannot resist a nap in the buggy. So stuck in the house with a grumpy baby .

hmmm. I guess I'll just have to put up with feeling like a git for a while. I'm sure she'll adjust.

eventually .

Could you keep pushing the morning nap on by just 15 mins every few days. that way she shouldn't get too ratty. We did this with dd at 12 mo. I know it limits your morning activities but might not take too long and will be worth it in the long-run as i'm sure all babies move to 1 post-lunch nap eventually.
