When did your LO move from a cot to a toddler bed?

Just that really. I

have an 18mo and another on the way, but we have plenty of time (due December). I just don't want to go buying another full sized cot so hoping by the time the new addition grows out of the next to me, my other little one might be ready for a toddler bed 🙈

Yup, DC2 is a climber too, but the only time she climbed out of her cot was with help from DC1! She can't do it by herself!

We must have them well trained because neither of them have done it (before anyone accuses me of being smug: they don't listen to us about much else!)

DS went into a toddler bed shortly before he was 2 IIRC. I got too pregnant to lift him in and out of his cot without knocking my bump on the rail 😂 A neighbour had given us a cot bed and it was already set up in his room so I just started putting him down in there instead. Ge had a couple of weeks where he was allowed to choose which one he slept in.

DD never really slept in a cot once she’d moved in with DS. She went straight onto a mattress on the floor at about 9/10 months as she was still a total boob addict and it meant o got feed her and sneak away easily.

They got bunk beds (low cabin height bed over a floor bed) at 1 and 3.

DS is almost 2 and I daren't take the sides off yet. He moves around so much in his sleep, he'd fall out in a heartbeat. Thankfully he's great at bedtime and never tries to climb out.

DS was a premmie, never tried to climb out. Went from cot to toddler bed at 3, fitted in it fine until he was 6.5. We then got a single bed. He was tiny - age 2 clothes at 5 - and is now 6ft tall duct former

I have always aimed to keep them in a cot as long as possible. My first was in a cot until nearly 4 and my second is 2.5 and still in one. Have no intentions of moving until they either learn to climb out (thankfully not been attempted yet!) or they're old enough to reason with! When I transitioned my eldest, it was a complete non event. He was old enough to explain it all to and he knew our expectations (stay in bed!) and that's what he did. Hoping for the same second time around 🤞🏻. So my advice... don't rush it!

I also have one on the way (October) and am moving my 22 month old into a cot bed and a new bedroom in about a month to make way for the new arrival in the cot. Will let you know how I get on!

We have just taken the side off the cot bed for our son who is 2 years and 4 months. It's been a week. He hasn't napped at home since and it's taking us hours to get him to sleep at night ... he is also falling out twice a night. I think it was too early for us and I'm considering taking a step backwards! Wish I'd read this thread first.

When they start climbing out anyway, or when they are continent enough to want access to the toilet/potty in the night. I would rather buy another cot bed than rush them out of their cage tbh 😬

Justanothercyster · 28/04/2023 10:04

@Verigio yes please do!

@YomAsalYomBasal cage 😂

Another benefit though of no sides is that lifting an 18 month- 2 year old is pretty heavy. If you having to do daily whilst pregnant and after birth it’s not fun. With no side earlier, toddler can get in and out and you can sit on the bed to settle them, rather than lean over.

NameChange30 · 28/04/2023 14:22

Is it a cot you have atm (as opposed to a cot bed)? If you have a cot ie it can't be converted into a toddler bed, it is worth getting a cot bed, because they you can put your daughter in the cot bed now, keeping the cot for baby, and then you can convert it to a toddler bed when she'd ready, rather than when baby needs the cot.

Justanothercyster · 28/04/2023 19:08

@NameChange30 yes just a normal cot, will look into a cot bed. I feel like she would just be in and out at the moment with a normal bed, but perhaps a cot bed is a good idea if it will last a few more years
