Travel cot - longer use

Hi, I need some advice please. I will be staying with my family for a couple of months with my 6mo baby and I am buying a travel cot for that time, however I am not sure if the thinner, 4cm thick travel cot mattress is going to be comfortable and safe for such a long time? Should I get a 10cm one for the actual cot instead? Would that work?

Babies are light and so don't need as much padding as us heavy adults. The 4cm will be fine. In fact we didn't bother at all with mattresses in travel cots when we used them.

It tot me worried a bit because it's not just for a few days but a couple of months, I wouldn't want the baby to be uncomfortable like as if I had to sleep on an air mattress or something like that! Not to mention unsafe for any reason of course.. thank you

Mine slept in a travel cot for 2 months when we moved abroad and were waiting on shipping that included her proper cot. We just used the thin mattress it came with and it was fine, she slept through so was clearly comfy enough!

Oh awesome thank you @FlounderingFruitcake , may I ask how old was she at the time?

And I’ve never heard of it being unsafe, clearly no lasting effects here as she was 9 months at the time and is now almost 6. Logically I don’t get how it could be safe for 1-2 weeks whilst you’re on holiday but not safe for longer use, surely it’s safe overnight or it’s not, but I might be missing something!

I think I saw somewhere someone mentioning putting their physical development at risk but not sure if that is true...

That is probably something extreme though!

Was that something to do with using them as a playpen for too long so LO can’t crawl or cruise? IDK just guessing as it makes no sense to me. I’ve read that they’re not designed for long term use, well obviously because the clue is in the name, but I’ve never seem anything that suggests there’s a point where they become unsafe. The lullaby trust only talks about not putting quilts on top of the mattress to make it more comfortable and keeping it away from radiators or blind cords etc. I think the biggest issue might be that baby isn’t particularly comfortable in it and doesn’t sleep as well, but that was never an issue for us.

I do hope you live near me. I have a travel cot, only used once. I have been trying to gift it to a charity shop, but it is too heavy for me to carry. Please PM me if you think you can use it . I am in East London.

@FlounderingFruitcake No I don't think so.. I'm probably overthinking things! 😆 thank you!

@florentina1 oh no sadly I'm not nearby.. have you tried Facebook marketplace or vinted?

Thar is a shame. I am not too savvy where those sites are concerned. I do know how to use freecycle though, so I will put it on there.
