9 months -Scream night wake

Hello,

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. My 9 and a half month old baby still wakes once overnight (completely varies time wise, can be 12am, 1.30, 3am, 4.30am etc) and SCREAMS/shouts the house down when he does. No tears, just very angry/upset sounding. It’s been happening since January and I’m at a complete loss. He’s never slept through which is frustrating but I’ve made my peace with it. However with his night wake he just sounds so distressed. He isn’t comforted by me holding, rocking, talking to him and actually tries to roll/push out my arms but equally isn’t happy being left in his cot and soothed. Most of the time his dummy is still in and he can put it back in anyway if it’s out. The only thing that settles him is offering some milk but surely he can’t still need this at his age??

When he wakes for the day he’s perfectly happy talking to himself in his cot and rolling around for 20-30 mins. He does the same thing when he stays over with each granny.

I’ve thought about sleep training but not sure with his type of cry because it’s so, so angry/upset sounding. It’s actually deafening when you’re holding him. He never cries like this at any other time.

Hopefully someone else has experienced this!

Babies through to small children wake up crying in the night.

If milk soothes and settles him, offer milk. He’s still a tiny baby!

Sorry he's so distressed.

I would say he's hungry and waking for milk, especially if he's not soothed other ways.

It's not abnormal for a child his age to still wake for milk and if he's only waking once, he can connect his sleep cycles and it's not a sleep training issue.

Milk sounds perfectly normal at 9 months, I’d deff do that.

Sounds like he is hungry or thirsty - give them milk. My 20 month still wakes for a drink- it's completely normal

Thanks everyone. I hadn’t actually considered that he might be thirsty as opposed to hungry. Or that this is completely normal! The other 6 babies in our group have been sleeping through since about 5 months, so I’ve been wondering what I’m doing wrong. But also just hate how distressed he is when he wakes up, it’s horrible.

@pinkunicorns54 yeah the fact it’s only one wake is what also made me think it didn’t quite add up for sleep training.
