3 weeks old baby very noisy sleeper when in moses basket, quiet when in our arms

My 3 weeks old boy makes very loud and to be honest scary sounds when sleeping in his moses basket. I was told it is normal and goes away. I noticed that he makes none of those sounds when sleeping in our arms though (which he does during the day). Why would this be the case? Does it mean he gets worse quality of sleep when sleeping on his own? Is he suffering during his night sleep? Makes me feel guilty that I put him to sleep in his moses basket at night when all those sounds make it seem that his sleep is so uncomfortable comparing to when he sleeps in arms. I can't imagine holding him in arms throughout the night though.

No idea why they do it but mine did too.

it’s possible it just sounds louder at night as we lie awake listening to them and worrying about every noise and movement. Try not to worry and use the time he sleeps to also sleep

definitely don’t hold him all night as you won’t be able to sleep yourself!

you could look into co-sleeping though if you’re able (I couldn’t because my husband rolls around too much at night and I was worried he’d squish the baby)

Totally normal. Baby has had 9 months of being cocooned all cosy inside you and isn't used to the sensation of being on a hard flat surface with space all around him/her. Being in someone's arms, held close, warm, hearing a heartbeat is a much more familiar and comforting feeling. Plus their digestive systems are immature and they probably sense digestion and other bodily functions much more acutely than we do. Hard to say whether it's a better quality sleep in your arms but it's not practical to hold them 24/7, and safe sleeping guidelines mean they kind of have to get used to it! Which they do before you know it.

Newborns are the loudest sleepers. I think during the day there is more noise around so you don’t notice as much plus it’s possibly due to the position. Lying flat on back versus being tucked tightly into you.
We cosleep with our 8 week old and he is still noisy at night.

I wondered if it might be stuffiness caused by lying flat on his back, whereas in your arms he's probably tilted upright slightly making it easier to breathe.

You could try raising the head of his basket (prop the feet on a book for example) to see if it makes any difference.

Thank you all, really reassuring to read your messages!
I also suspected that may be it is due to laying flat when in moses basket. I think last night he was actually bit less loud than usual, will see what this night brings.
