Hi, I came across this alternative to cots for new babies (up to 12months old). Has anyone any experience (good or bad) with this? It looks good and makes sense but i wonder what it is like in practice? Thanks

I think several MNers have used them. Are they the Amby things? If so, try doing "search for messages" for Amby- it brigs up lots of threads.

had one for first baby as she just wouldn't sleep in a moses basket and was sleeping on my chest every night. have to say it made no difference at all and she would wake up jsut as frequently and still couldn't get herself back to sleep. abandoned it after 2 weeks and just elt her stay in our bed. new baby has no problem with a moses basket so we haven't bothered with it for him. so quite an expensive experiment - i have one for sale then if you're looking!!!!

well, just to add a different view - we found ours fantastic - DS a bit colicky and not a great sleeper and it really seemed to help - also really easy to move (over a nine month period) from one room to another, and to take away for the odd night (no need for a travel cot). easy to move next to bed and, in dazed, sleep deprived state, bounce up and down while sort of snoozing. Guess the benefits depend on whether you have a good sleeper or not!

And - given that I saw a thread on this today - we had no trouble at all moving to a cot bed.

Of course, all babies are different - but I'd snap bbb's offer up!

We swore by ours ...

I bought one when DD was tiny and sleeping really badly in the moses basket - she also had colic. Did not work as discovered she wanted to sleep on her tummy and this can't be done in the hammock. She learnt to roll over really early and the hammock frustrated the hell out of her!

Ds now 5months loves it. He is so calm when i put him in it for a nap during the day. he just likes the feel of it. i can bounce him of to sleep quite well in it. also find i can get him to have nice long naps of nearly 2 hours in it, which he would not do if on the bed.

as others has said its quite easy to bounce when you are semi asleep. i would not be without it.

they have a good resale value on ebay so I felt it was worth the gamble to try it.

i LOVED mine and so did dd. loads of my friends have them now and think they're great.

Me too, our Amby hammock is finally starting to get some use

We intially used ours for dd - she loved it for the first 7 months and the bouncing was great - as others said really helped with her colic. She developed a total aversion to it for some reason and we switched her to a cotbed next to us and that stopped the hysteria. Ds absolutely hated it and wouldn't use it at all - ended up with an arms reach co sleeper which he was really happy in - I think it really depends on the baby - they seem to be a bit of a marmite thing - they either love them or hate them! But as others have said - they really keep their resale value - I sold mine on ebay for £10 less than a new one - so probably worth a go cos when they work they are fab!

it was the best thing we bought ds. he hated his moses basket and crib so we co-slept but was nervous about smothering with the duvet. this was a fantastic alternative. i see now you can buy them in argos but a couple of years ago, we had to get it from america
