What does your newborn sleep in during the day?

Currently have an almost 4 week old.

At night, he sleeps in a sleepyhead inside of his next to me crib. Does a good stretches of sleep in this.

During the day, we have the Moses basket downstairs but he hates it. Never does more than about 30 mins.

Today, I've brought the sleepyhead downstairs with me and have put him in this on the sofa. So far so good!

I'm just curious, what does your newborn sleep in during the day if they're not having a contact nap/in a sling?

Also, we swaddle him at night in his grosnug sleeping bag. Do people tend to swaddle for every nap too? Should I be swaddling for all sleeps consistently when I'm not having a contact nap?

We swaddled for every nap and sleep. Didn't make a damn bit of difference for us as he would only sleep on our chest anyway, but swaddling does help them feel secure. Sleepy head is fine to sleep in as long as you're awake and watching him. Congrats on your little one ♥️

We have a wooden rocking crib downstairs so I put his sleepyhead in that for daytime naps (when he isn’t on me) 😂 I don’t swaddle him during the day.

Swaddled and into the Tiny Love 3 in 1 napper

I’m not sure it’s recommended to have the sleepyhead in the next to me crib. Is it not a SIDS risk? Maybe double check.

FebMama · 24/02/2023 12:47

@chirrpy thank you!

And thanks for the replies so far.

@jumperoozles the difficulty I have is that he does not settle in the Moses basket but the next to me crib is also too much of a large space for him if that makes sense? He likes to feel quite snug and even in the swaddle sleeping bag, he just does not settle in his next to me crib.

I chanced the sleepyhead inside the next to me crib with my eldest and it worked well, and seems to be the same this time around too. It's the only way I can get him down for stretches of sleep where he's not being held or sleeping on my chest 😕

Mine all mostly cpntact napped but if I managed to put them down it was in a "next to me" type crib in the living room or DD1 in a moses basket. I didn't swaddle them or anything just put them in there, sometimes I put them in with a muslin blanket that I'd had stuffed in my top so it smelt of me/milk to keep them settled a bit longer.

Also I don't want to be a dick but those Sleepy Head nests are only supposed to be used for supervised sleep not for night time sleep as they're a SIDS risk. You'd be fine using it on the sofa in the day time though.

FebMama · 24/02/2023 12:54

@WarrickDavisAsPlates thank you for this. Completely know it's a risk but I can't seem to get stretches of sleep without using this at night. Otherwise I'm up with him every hour or risk falling asleep whilst holding baby which is obviously not an option ☹️

Pushchair during the day, no swaddle, then cot at night with swaddle.

OP it won't be long and you'll need to start transitioning out of a swaddle as baby starts to show signs of rolling, that, that will be much harder if you are also using the sleepyhead as that will be a major adjustment for baby once those 2 things are gone

My little one was 4 weeks on Thursday. He sleeps on me during the day in my lap (usually I breastfeed him to sleep) but if I wait until he's in a deep sleep then I can transfer him slowly into his pram and he can sleep in there too.
We bed share at night following the safe seven which is on lullaby trust (if you want to try an alternative to the sleepyhead). We get 3 hour stretches at night doing this.

Also have you tried white noise? We use this too, it helps.

Excited101 · 24/02/2023 13:05

The sleepyhead is absolutely not safe to be used for unsupervised sleep, and you’re not able to supervise if you’re sleeping too. Why do you think they changed their name to ‘dock-a-tot’?

have a look at safe sleep guidelines for clarification- I’m sure your eldest was fine, but there will be others that weren’t.

NameChangeFor2023 · 24/02/2023 13:21

Mine is about the same age and wakes as soon as put down sometimes. I just hold for longer. Maybe try your t shirt next to them as I do wonder if it's the smell going, then lift t shirt out before you go to sleep. It's worked a couple of times for me now.

FebMama · 24/02/2023 13:26

Thank you all. I do appreciate the comments about safe sleeping. Although my thread was more about day sleep, I will try tonight again without the sleepyhead and try and put him straight down in the next to me crib. Admittedly I haven't tried this for a week or two so he may be better.

Do you have a bassinet/carrycot from a travel system/pram?

We used to put that inside the next to me crib when our DS was a newborn as he was tiny and looked so small in just the next 2 me crib.

FebMama · 24/02/2023 13:38

@feelingnaughty69 yes we have one of those. I did try the Moses basket inside the next to me crib when he was first born - again, he hated it.

I know exactly what you mean about baby feeling tiny inside the next to me. It's such a large space for a newborn he just seemed lost in there! I'm convinced that's why he wouldn't settle in there when I first tried it. Hence why I opted for the sleepyhead as it makes him feel more snug. It's so difficult to find that balance between safe sleeping and finding something that works for parents and baby so that everyone is getting the rest they need.

I just figured the sleepyhead inside the crib is far more safer than me falling asleep with him on my chest 🤷🏽‍♀️

Gosh why can't babies just sleep when they're put down, don't they realise sleep is one of the greatest things imaginable 🤣

Try the bassinet thing and see if it works. It is so difficult to find a balance, but it shall soon pass and before you know it your'll have a one year old that's into everything and your'll still have had no rest 😂

BabyMomma2021 · 24/02/2023 15:12

I used sleepyhead on the sofa during the day. Worked fine for us. My baby also like the feeling of being snug.

For night time, I would get her to sleep in sleepyhead then move to next to me whilst asleep - again this worked great for us, maybe too well as I still have to snuggle my 14 month old to sleep then move her to the cot when alseep :)
