Single mattress suitable for 18 month old

Hi,

We're wanting to move my 18-month old into his own room soon. He's currently bedsharing with mum.

We were planning to just move him straight into a single bed (a low Montessori style one) rather than bothering with any kind of cot bed at this stage. However, when I've been looking at mattresses and a lot of them only seem to be suitable from 2+, 3+ or 4+ years old (e.g. Jay-Be's toddler mattress is 2+, Simba's kids mattress is 3+, Stompa, Little Green Sheep and Snuz are all 4+).

Is there something I'm missing here? Are there any recommendations you have for a mattress that would be appropriate?

Or are we making a mistake by wanting to move him into a single bed at this age? Should we just get a cot bed instead?

All advice is welcome, thank you!

When we moved DD onto a full sized bed (straight from a cot), we used one of the mattresses we already had - it didn't occur to us not to. Not sure why a toddler would need a specialist mattress (other than to sell more beds)

I think you just need a totally standard foam or sprung mattress. No memory foam /gel tops or anything fancy.

I put my 8 month old in a floor bed with a firm sprung mattress. As long as the mattress doesn't mold into the baby's shape, like a memory foam would, or dip more than a couple centimetres under baby's head when they're lying on it then it should be fine! So just look for a firm mattress, and some even do extra firm. We bought ours from Bensons for Beds on sale, and I'd noticed one of the reviews was from someone who had got the same one for their baby's floor bed so was reassured it's probably good enough!

That's the one we have, but went for small double as I still feed to sleep side lying and sometimes stay sleeping next to him so wanted space!

my 18mo is in a montessori style bed (but small double size because I want to be comfy when I inevitably get in with her during the night). We just used a mattress we already had. I think as long as it doesn't have any memory foam and is on the firmer side you are OK.

We had Jay-Be and it was the shittest thing we've ever purchased. In fact we had two (bought at the same time. One was yellow and one was orange). Both were shite.

We swapped them for the IKEA mattress

Thank you for this. It definitely seems to be the case that memory foam isn't suitable. However, when I spoke with Stompa (who just use regular foam + pocket springs) they strongly advised that their mattresses wouldn't be suitable for an 18 month old (for both comfort and safety reasons). That being said, he's sleeping in an adult bed with mum at the moment so it's clearly not going to be worse than that!

Out of interest, what bed do you have? We were also considering small doubles for the same reason, but haven't found any (yet) that we thought were appropriate.

Thanks again.

@potatosalad1 we cheated and got my FIL to make it (he's a joiner). An absolute life saver, saved us a lot of money and it's literally made to our spec!

Was definitely the right style of bed for us though, I coslept with baby so knew we were never going to get in a cot and worried about her rolling out of a toddler style bed. The Montessori style is brilliant, she loves climbing in and out.

With Jay-Be you can feel all the springs etc inside. It was awful and gave our DC aches and pains x

Thanks very much for that. I think you're probably right that something like this is fine. It wouldn't have been something I'd have even thought about if not for seeing a bunch of companies specifically stating a minimum age - that then got me questioning what is a suitable age for any mattress.

I did also speak on live chat earlier with Silent Night and they claim that there is no minimum age for their Healthy Growth range of products so I'm going to add those to the shortlist.

Out of interest, what is the floorbed you have? A small double would actually be ideal but I've only really found singles so far.

Didn't even realise there was such a thing. Ds went straight onto the mattress of the single pull out bed we already had once getting him back down in the cot was too much with his weight etc

Woodendonkey · 20/02/2023 17:45

A toddler mattress should be fine. As you say the current mattress is an adult one anyway and you’re not bothered!

GinnyBee · 20/02/2023 18:21

@potatosalad1 we got a bedoo floor bed. It doesn’t have rails but for the time being I’ve put a roll out futon down next to it in case he rolls off, and will take it up when he hasn’t fallen off for a while. We have timber floors instead of carpet so I wanted a softer landing. You can just get slats and put a mattress down, that’s the cheapest way to do a floor bed, but I wanted a frame, and bedoo have leg extenders too for about £20 and the frames have the slots for legs already, so that in future when he wants to be in a big boy bed all we need to do it screw on the legs.

@GinnyBee , great advice, thanks very much. Was everything ok ordering from Bedoo? I'd seen them but been put off by their Trustpilot reviews (lots of people saying their beds took months to arrive, no contact, no refunds etc.).

Just get an IKEA mattress

GinnyBee · 21/02/2023 07:51

Yeah we had no issue with Bedoo. I hadn’t even seen the reviews or might not have ordered! But we got a delivery date confirmed really quickly, I think it was three weeks from ordering to receiving it.

Dad2153 · 14/07/2023 21:53

Seen a few references to Bedoo on this thread. Quick warning that I paid my money and almost 3 months later no delivery. Website, email and phones not connecting and its clear my money has been taken fraudulently. In the process of working with my Banks Fraud Team to try and recover my money. Do not believe the 'positive' reviews as they seem fake to me when taken in context of all the people who have been scammed when just trying to buy beds for thier kids. JAMES EDWARDS CURTIS is the Director and is clearly a wrong'un.
