How does sleep training work with a dummy?

Just that really... our nearly 5 month old's sleep is shocking and I'm considering some form of gentle sleep training when the time is right. She currently has a dummy to help settle which has been a god send. We're wondering if sleep training will mean we need to get rid of this as at the moment she needs our help to reinsert. Or is there a form of sleep training that works with a dummy? I'm not adverse to getting rid of the dummy if it will prove a hindrance to sleep training, and would rather do this sooner rather than later given her age. TIA x

I found that a dummy helped massively with sleep training. We would scatter a load of them in the cot and she was able to find and re-insert one by herself by about 7 months.

i sleep trained mine and they both had a dummy. Wait a few months and they can reinsert themselves - I did used to leave a good few in the cot so they could find them easily though.

I used dummies with controlled crying. When I would go in I would comfort, pop dummy back in and then head out. Got rid of the dummies later.

Thanks all! Good to hear we can keep it for now and get rid later. @Camilliatile and @Namechange12908 what sleep training method did you use and at what age roughly please?

My DS couldn’t replace the dummy himself and would wake constantly wanting it to be replaced. So we got rid of the dummy at 6 months, then did Ferber method a few days later.

I was really surprised how quickly he got used to it. Sleep training is still the best decision I’ve ever made (DS is almost 2 now and still goes to sleep in seconds on his own).

It's up to you really. At 4 month sleep regression it got exhausting reinserting dummy and I learnt that with sleep training it's ideal to get rid of all sleep props.

So we got rid, and DC learned to self-sooth without. Considering how many of my friends have kids older than mine (9m) still stuck on dummy it was the best thing. DC child also started speaking earlier than theirs and I attribute that partly to being free to babble as opposed to muted.

We did controlled crying, it only took a few nights and after that they started sleeping though.

However if they woke in the middle of the night (not very often) we would still bring them in with us if they didn’t quickly self sooth (usually because of teething or illness).
