How old were your kids when they dropped their morning sleep?

Dd is 1 this month and is starting at nursery a couple of weeks later. They have asked me to try to get her into their routine, which I can understand, but they have said try to drop her morning nap. Trouble is she still seems to really need it and is knackered by the time I put her down about 9.30am and usually sleeps for at least an hour still. A friend of mine said 'ooh she's young to be dropping her morning sleep' but I'm not sure. How old were yours when they went to 1 nap a day? Should I keep putting her down seeing as how she seems to still need it? Just after opinions really.

Does she have an afternoon one too? If she does then she's about the same age as my ds1 was when he started to drop it, but he was quite hard to keep awake through his lunch when he first did it. Surely nursery can start this routine off - more to stimulate and keep her awake there?

My ds is 15 months and still naps 1.h hour in the morning and 1 hr in the afternoon. He needs it, all kids are different. All the nurserys I looked at (5) said they'd go with whatever we wanted, although he is too nosy to sleep much at nursery anyway!

ds is the same age, and he still needs his 2 naps - 10 and 2.30 usually. he can go til 11.30 at a push, but will still need an afternoon catnap if he does.

I would stick with morning naps on days you have her and accept that she will be tireder on days that she is at nursery. Mine both had to drop naps at 12 months when they moved to the toddler room in nursery, but both coped. DD is now 3.9 and hasn't napped at nursery for yonks, but still often has 2 hours at home.

Thanks for the replies! She does sleep in the afternoon as well, usually about 2.30 for good hour and half (2 if am really lucky!). Guess this means she still needs it, though think she will also be too nosy to sleep once she starts!

We decided to move DD onto one nap a day at 12 months because of nursery (she started at 6mo and alternated am and pm). When she was there mornings, she wouldn't sleep til she crashed around 11 or 12 so wouldn't eat her lunch well. If she was there afternoons, she'd nap at home at 9.30 and then not sleep again all day!

We followed the baby whisperer method where you move the morning nap on 15mins or so every few days, so they get used to it gradually. They get to a point where you need to give them a good snack before their nap as they won't have lunch til late, and then eventually they'll be having lunch before their nap. We aimed for a noon naptime to fit with nursery.

Our DD wouldn't wake til 7am, but if yours is an early riser the bw recommends working on sleeping in later first as it will be too long for them to cope with.

As you can see from my post, she was there a while before we changed things, so it might be worth waiting and seeing rather than changing routines now.

DD2 was just over 13 months old. We did baby whisperer but didn't do this extending morning nap thing she just did it by herself. Wasn't as tired at her usual morning time so the time started to gradually get later and now we have one sleep for about 1 1/2 hours - 2 hours at around 12ish. She is 15 months.
