Met a mum at a toddler group today who was telling me her dd got up at 8.30 this morning. Ds got up at 5.08 (grr) as is quite common with him. I said "oh well, I suppose I shouldn't complain as he was asleep before 7".. She reckons her dd is always asleep then too!!! Please please tell me most babies are more like my ds before I despair even more at the horrible early mornings.

my DD is 25 months and goes to bed 6-6.30 and generally gets up between 7-7.30am. She also has a nap after lunch 3 times a week for about an hour and a hlagf!

deaconblue · 07/02/2008 19:10

sounds like it really depends on the baby then. Ds does still nap for 1 1/2 to 2 hours and perhaps I should cut it down but he's sooooooooo tired by lunch time and now that I'm pregnant I'm desperate for a proper rest by then. So in a way I guess I'm choosing day time nap over a lay in.
I wouldn't be surprised if he sleeps longer when he gives up the naps too.

def keep the nap until he's ready to drop it

he'll start to resist going down, then you'll know

until then, ime, it prob wouldn't help to cut it out. he'd be massively overtired by bedtime

I think so too. To be honest the brand new trick of laying on the floor/ground/tesco car park shrieking with rage is bad enough without him being overtired, good job he has a goldfish memory and forgets why he's so cross in a second

Dd2 sleeps 7-7 and sleeps for prob a total of 2 hours in the day. I suppose some children are different. My dd1 did not sleep at all!!

My dd goes to bed at 6pm and would love to keep her up later so she gets up later (usually wakes at 6 but has been 5 this week) but she just has to go to bed at 6 as so tired after nursery. Our quality time is in the morn, although 5am starts can be very wearing.

ruddynorah · 07/02/2008 19:56

mine's 20 months, doesn't nap and always sleeps at least 12 hours, often 13 hours, and sometimes 14 hours. she's never been much of a napper.

pootleflump · 07/02/2008 20:02

Until dd was 2.5 she slept 7 - 6.30/7 as well as 2 hours during the day.

She's now 3.4 and sleeps 7 - 7.30/8 with no daytime nap anymore.

She's always had 12 hours at night since 4 months old, don't think this is particularly unusual, the majority of my friends children do the same.

Dd (2 last monday) sleeps 13 hours a night- goes to bed around 7, gets up around 8. She still has 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours nap a day....
but then Dh and I could both sleep for England, so I reckon its in the genes

mummynumnum · 07/02/2008 21:04

makes me wonder if going to bed at 6 is highly unusual and I should try and address this!!!

pulapula · 08/02/2008 07:44

DD has done 12-14 hrs a night since 6mo. Her longest lie-in ever was 10.30am but usually wakes 8-9am after 7.30 bedtime (she's now 3.1).

A friend of mine has a toddler who 'just didn't need as much sleep' and was always awake at 5am. After a spell of sleep training he now sleeps 7-7. If you aren't happy with 5am starts, then i would say its possible to change them .

My 4th DS didn't sleep right through the night till he was 5 - not five months but 5!!
We tried everything! My HV ran a course for mums of babes who didnt sleep. Every night we had to fill in this form and keep a diary. After 6 weeks she said 'Sorry shabster but if he was mine I would throw him through the bloody window!'

Found that not making a big deal of the situation helped the most - did give me amazing bags under my eyes - but hay ho!

Now we are entering early puberty and he still struggles to go to sleep and then festers in his pit on school mornings.
