13 week old has started waking up screaming in the night every night last few weeks and inconsolable

My son has never slept well but was doing 3/4 hour stretches

The last week he's been waking up sobbing uncontrollably and is completely inconsolable. The doctors given us baby gaviscon which initially (we've had 3 days) hasn't made a difference and I was unsure if silent reflux would even start in him this late?

Any ideas what it could be? It breaks my heart he's in pain and I can't help (and isn't doing much for my own tired state)

He's BF and has gained weight well although is a small baby and has stayed on the 10th percentile since birth

Have you tried capol? I remember DC having similar issues around that time and it seemed to be headaches

Babies don’t really get headaches.

What time is the baby waking up and for how long is he crying?

2 hrs is a newborn night sleep cycle. When he is 16-20 weeks old it will change to 45 mins.
also 3am onwards is when babies come into a lighter sleep.

How are you putting him to sleep currently?

Try reading "the baby detective" book - she runs through all the different things that could be waking a baby up and then you can go through a process of elimination from there. It was a life saver for us and we even use it now with our toddler. It could be temperature dropping, it could be over tiredness, it might be a noise that's waking him. Have you been keeping a brief diary of when it happens?
Also do you use the 10 minute rule? Where you don't go to them or pick them up for 10 minutes? Some babies just cry in their sleep but they're still asleep so a lot of parents ruin the sleep cycle by picking them up and waking them (same goes for naps).
