Newborn not sleeping unless held

Any tips for how to get four newborn to sleep in bedside cot? He has not taken to it so we started putting him in the basinet part of the pram. Now we realise that it isn't really good to sleep him in basinet every night and we should really use the bedside cot. Now he doesn't even sleep in the basinet after and needs to be held the whole night! It's just not feasible. Please give me some pointers!

Some pram bassinets are suitable for overnight sleeping. If yours is and you’ve had more success there then I’d try that over the bedside cot. Movement is good for getting them to sleep too so put it on the pram frame and push until asleep. You can do this in the living room then carry the bassinet upstairs with you when you go to bed. And if you haven’t already tried it, also a dummy as it’s very soothing for them to suck.

How newborn is newborn?

We held dd in shifts for about 3 weeks because that was all she had known. By 3 weeks we put her down in her bassinet right next to one of us on the floor. We would of course comfort her anytime she cried but as soon as she settled put her in the bassinet rather than continuing the sleep in our arms. We also combined this with really tackling her wind with some kind of drops that were expensive but a god send.
It wasn't a magic wand but within 10 days she would do much longer stretches in the bassinet, and ince she had cracked that she moved into her (standalone) crib with ease

Sounds like you’ve got a newborn, congratulations.

Why can’t he sleep in the bassinet?

Oh great tips thank you. He's just over two weeks old. He slept in the basinet for the first few days but now that he is mucusy and suffering a bit with it he won't go in there. Our pram is uppababy and you can leave them in bassinet for 24 hours but I thought it was not good for regular use. Maybe it's fine then and I try these tips and persist! Thanks all

At 2 weeks old, my advice is find some people who will sit with baby until eg. midnight and you go to bed at eg 7pm so you can get some sleep. Congratulations on the baby!

It's really good of you to start this thread. Alcohol is everywhere and so normalised - it's helpful to understand the dangers. When you watch a tv drama the actors are always pouring themselves large glasses of wine like it's water. I know I drink too much and threads like this always give me pause for thought.

It's interesting how alcohol affects some people worse than others. I had a friend who drank excessively in his 20s and 30s - and may well have carried on but he moved away so we didn't see each other any more. We shared a flat for a few years and I'd say he would get through 6-8 cans of strong lager a night. And smoke heavily. (It was his way of dealing with his anxiety/panic attacks/depression). Presumably his liver isn't great now but I'm not aware of any major issues. I hear from him once or twice a year so he's still alive and in his 60s now. He mentions a few health issues but none directly liver related.

Fresh newborns often need to feel enclosed, as they were in the womb. Have you tried a sleep sack/swaddle?

Also, cuddling my newborns until they fell asleep is one of my most precious memories. They're great big hulking kids now and I cling onto those memories for dear life some days! And no, that didn't create a rod for my own back, they were great sleepers.
