Toddler transition from cot

Hi all

My LO was 2 a few weeks ago. He is currently happy in his cotbed but thinking long term. Just wondering how everyone went about introducing a pillow and duvet, did you do this before or after transition to a bed?

Planning on getting my little one a single bed in Spring and having it sorted for when he is ready to come out of his cotbed. He is obsessed with getting under blankets on the sofa and having a pillow so although I was planning on doing it all in one go considering a pillow at least now in his cot bed.

What did you do and how did it go?

Thanks

I'd get him to he quilt and pillow now and then they can just be transferred to the single bed when you get that.

Does the cotbed transition to a toddler bed?

i took the sides off and put a little mattress on the floor incase he rolled off but toddler pillow and quilt just before so he could get used to that first

I changed to a toddler bed and gave my son a pillow and duvet at the same time, he took to it really well. He fell out of bed a couple times at first but we just put pillows on the floor to cushion the fall (though being a toddler bed is wasn't far off the ground anyway) a baby gate on the bedroom door was also a life saver, my son is 3 and a half now and doesn't have a baby gate anymore and sleeps in a double bed without falling out 😊

We changed room, bed and bedding all in one go, at 2.5 yo. We presented it as a surprise and my little one was very excited. I was worried about night excursions, but it actually went fine, other than maybe a shorter sleep just the first night.
I think there's no right or wrong approach though, it very much depends on the child and the phases they're going through. I knew she was at a stage where change excited her, and took full advantage of that (we potty trained at the same time too). Your LO might benefit from a staggered approach, depending on his character.

We gave our son a duvet and pillow in his cot at about 18 months, then moved him into his own room with a normal single bed at just over 2 when his little sister arrived. As PP said, ours rolled out of bed a few times in the first 2 weeks then they somehow just click and don't do it again 😆
We made a big deal about his big boy room and bed and bought duvet covers with his favourite characters which I think helped!

Sorry, to be clear he was already in his own room in a cot, I just meant he moved rooms into his big boy room so his little sister could get the nursery with the cot.

We used a very flat pillow for naps to begin with. And kept a good eye on them.
When in the bed they can move away from the pillow,
