Calpol plug in?

SunnySide1992 · 24/01/2023 13:31

Hello I'm probably posting in the wrong place so sorry in advance. DD has a bad cold and cough that's keeping her up at night.
Has anyone used calpol plug in?
Can I keep it plugged in all night with the door shut?
Any other tips when they have a cold/cough at night?
Thanks in advance

I’ve never found it makes a difference to coughing, but it does have a stupid light on it that keeps DD awake. If you’ve not already bought it I wouldn’t bother!

wakeysleepy · 24/01/2023 13:35

The scent is very strong and would help with a stuffy nose. Not sure about coughing.

I agree with PP. The light is ridiculous.

If your baby's room is small I would put it on before they went to bed and kept it on for a short time and switch it off before you go to bed as it is very strong.

cortisolqueen · 24/01/2023 13:42

We use it and it seems to help a bit.

FlounderingFruitcake · 24/01/2023 13:42

The light is ridiculously bright and the smell is horrible and horrifically strong. You can smell it downstairs even when the door is shut, it’s that bad. And IME it does naff all for coughing anyway. I’d give Nurofen since that lasts 8 hours, use one of those snot suckers (we had a fantastic battery powered Braun one) and put some baby vapour rub on their chest instead.

anomaly23 · 24/01/2023 13:45

I used to paint the light with nail varnish it was so bright.

I didn't find the smell did anything.

You would be cheaper long term to buy an oil diffuser form Amazon and some eucalyptus oil from home bargains. 4 drops of oil, fill the rest of the diffuser with water and switch on. Light on it is optional.

We have one and it works really well for ds when he has a cold and a cough. The light doesn't bother him at all. I leave it on all night and he has the door most of the way closed.

My DD has a wedge cushion (like a back support type) under her mattress to keep the head end elevated a little bit while she’s in bed - I’ve found that makes a massive difference when she has a phlegmy/chesty cough. Not so much for a tickly throat cough, but that’s what Tixylix is for.

Klearvol capsules on the bedding and Snufflebabe ointment have been very helpful too.

I haven’t bothered with the Calpol plug-in because my DD will stay awake staring at the smallest light, so like PPs experiences above it would have been more hassle than benefit. I think @anomaly23’s suggestion for an alternative is good and will be doing that myself!

anomaly23 · 24/01/2023 13:57

@BumblebeeWest you can use the klearvol capsules in the oil diffuser instead of eucalyptus oil.

I would buy the 300ml one, the 150ml one would work well in a small room but only lasts for 4-5 hours instead of 8 like the bigger ones.

The light is really annoying but we have sworn by then since having DD. We find they really help open your airways while sleeping - for us as well as baby.

LadyEloise1 · 24/01/2023 14:00

They say on Mumsnet that rubbing Vicks from the jar into the soles of feet helps with coughs.
I haven't trued it myself but might be worth a go ?

NotEnoughMud · 24/01/2023 14:02

Duck tape over the light in our house

TheRookie · 24/01/2023 14:19

I don't think it helps coughing but it's brilliant for congestion for my 2. We have used it since my eldest was a baby. We have put electrical tape over the light because it is so bright and blue!

I recently bought a new one for my son and the light is now orange.

Getthefiregoing · 24/01/2023 14:25

I hate them. So overpowering. A diffuser/humidifier with a few drops of Olbas oil has always worked best for us.

Todd5 · 06/06/2023 10:37

Thank you! Wasn't sure how to pull the pad in!

I also have the same opinion as you that Olbas oil is really good for me too.
getting over it

The Calpol plug-in has been a lifesaver for many parents, y2mate providing relief and helping little ones sleep through the night despite colds and coughs.
Yes, it can be safely kept plugged in all night with the door shut, ensuring continuous comfort for your child mp3 juice.
In addition to using the plug-in, keeping the room humidified and elevating the head slightly can also greatly improve nighttime breathing and comfort for children with colds tubidy.

bought and stopped using, the light is sooooo bright. If DS has a cold/cough now we use a humidifier and olbas oil and prop his cot matress up with pillow/towels under the mattress so he sleeps on a slight incline (unless he does a 180 and ends up at the other end!) but do find it helps and he stays up the inclined end more when needed. didn't start doing this until he was about 11 months though.
