5 Month old - waking to feed

Fhope1988 · 20/01/2023 09:10

Hi
my 5 month old won’t take more than 4oz of milk in one feed and then continues to wake up in the night hungry.
Any tips to keep him fuller longer so we can both get more sleep!
Thankyou 😊

Sorry but I think that’s completely normal at that age, you have to wait it out. Next month you can wean but it might be a long time before they’re full enough to sleep for a long stretch.

Skinnermarink · 20/01/2023 09:20

How many times do they wake? Mine was still on about 4x a night at that age…

Sucessinthenewyear · 20/01/2023 09:23

It’s normal for a baby to wake for milk several times a night.

daysleepers · 20/01/2023 09:46

Perfectly normal at this stage, I don't think any of my children reliable slept through until 2 years old in all honesty.

5 months old they still need the calories and are actually hungary so need the milk.

daysleepers · 20/01/2023 09:47

hungry!* not Hungary lol

I'd say twice is good going for a 5 month old!! I had every 45 mins until she was 19 months!

BabyOnBoard90 · 20/01/2023 15:25

Wait till 6 months and you should be able to wean off night feeds.

We just settled DC by patting through the cries and getting back to sleep. After 2 days DC no longer needed night feeds.

Calphurnia88 · 20/01/2023 15:33

Waking up for two feeds a night at 5 months is completely normal.

Emmamoo89 · 20/01/2023 15:35

Feed him every couple of hours during the day. My son is 9 months and back to sleep through. Was waking once through the night. He has 11 boobies and a puree

Emmamoo89 · 20/01/2023 15:35

The night*

LillyLeaf · 20/01/2023 15:38

I think twice is pretty good going at 5 months. Very normal to still want feeds during the night. I just fed on demand, bf but I guess bottle is pretty much the same.

simplesimply · 20/01/2023 15:42

What is his weight at the moment,
He should be able to eat more at a time,
My almost 4 month old weighs 6kg now and has 6oz every 3 hours during the day, her first bottle is between 8 & 9am and the last one is at around 9 pm she settles for the night at around 10pm and sleeps until 8/9 am. So that's 5 times 6 oz
Try and increase the amount he has at each feeding slowly and hopefully should be able to reduce night feeding

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 20/01/2023 15:48

Does he need a faster flow test? Sounds normal to me otherwise.

eurochick · 20/01/2023 15:49

Very normal. Mine was still having two feeds a night at that age. It eventually reduced to one and then she gave up night feeds completely at 19 months. You might have a way to go with disturbed nights...

Emmamoo89 · 20/01/2023 15:51

Forgot to saw cause I was feeding him every 2 hours he slept through from 11 weeks.

Try a faster flow teat and try and feed more frequently during the day

Unfortunately it's not quite that simple (otherwise there wouldn't be thousands of MN threads about wakeful/non-sleeping babies).

I fed roughly every 2 hours - sometimes more - but my baby didn't sleep through, and still doesn't, despite being a great eater.

Sounds like you got lucky!

I must admit its not really down to how or what they eat. It's down to the baby. Some love sleep. Some don't. I was a good sleeper so probably got it from me and so was his dad

Emmamoo89 · 20/01/2023 16:11

Sometimes getting all their calories can help. Just down to the baba

happynewyear55 · 20/01/2023 16:11

I think that's good going for a baby so little? I would leave it at that if she's content. My little boy is up at least 3/4 times a night and he's 15 months.

Haha, I was a good sleeper and still love my sleep now (sadly DS hasn't inherited that trait 😅).

Sorry to question, but I can't make the maths work on your previous response re frequency of feeding. 11 BF + 1 puree a day means you're feeding closer to hourly, surely?

Twizbe · 20/01/2023 16:22

Waking twice for milk at night is great going for a 5 month old.

Human babies are designed to feed little and often.

Haha my bad I was feeding every 2 hours. Only past 2 days. When it gets to 5 gets every hour and a double feed at 9 before going to sleep.
