Transitioning out of sleep bag

Hi all,

I'm after some advise please.

My little one is 18 months, we've just purchased him a toddler bed as he's outgrown his cot. I'm thinking of also introducing a pillow and duvet (so taking him out of his sleep bag).

He associates his sleep bag with bedtime as he only wears it for bed not in the day for naps.

I'm just wondering if I'm doing it to soon? When can toddlers have duvets and pillows? Has anyone got any tips for transitioning out of a sleep bag?

Thank you so much

We introduced ours late (just over 2) as our DD was so small.

I gave her the pillow first as she loved snuggling into the pillows on my bed. Never bothered her that toddler pillows are practically flat. Took her a while to use it properly though.

I gave her the duvet to snuggle up with on her bed with then introduced the idea of it being her main bedding. I really thought she'd kick up a fuss but she didn't. She 'travels' around the bed a lot during the night so it was difficult keeping her covered in cold weather, but she's now sleeping mainly in the right position after a few months

I found the best time to make the change was during the hot heatwave part of summer. They are naturally just wearing pjs or a sleepsuit to bed then. And then as it starts to get cooler start introducing a light blanket then and working up.

We transitioned ours around 22 months. Introduced a pillow first - would recommend Silentnight cot bed pillow - and then after a week or so, introduced a Silentnight cot bed duvet. Took ours a few weeks to learn how to keep the duvet on but it wasn't cold and we would tuck in every few hours.

Yeah my little one moves around a lot too.. I may wait a few more weeks for the warmish weather to come so he won't get too cold at night x

That's a really good idea, my little one moves around loads so worried he'd wake up cold all the time until he gets the hang of pulling the duvet back on him. I think I'm going to wait a few more weeks, Atleast it'll be warmer then

You can turn the duvet round and tuck it under the sides of the mattress. We waited a bit longer though. Lots of sleeping bag toddling!

We introduced bedding at 12mo (summer baby) but had to go back to sleeping bag in the winter because he was kicking it off and getting cold. Will try again in the summer

How did you find the translation from a cot to a cot bed/toddler bed? I'm scared lol

@jessscane It wasn't as bad as we thought it would be. We still have one of those portable bed sides on in case she rolls out and the other side is against the wall. She's only ever got out of bed in the night a handful of times. We thought she'd be out at any opportunity lol.

Ooo okay didn't think of that, that's a good idea too! Tbh ready everyone's comments I think I'll wait until the weather gets a bit warmer. Thanks so much for the comment though :)

I'm putting his toddler bed up today, it comes with a side thing attached so only has a small gap that he can get out off but I think I'll put something under the sheet so he can't roll out but can still get out if needs be if that makes sense. Wish me luck 🫣😅

I would suggest doing the bed change first, waiting for that to settle before losing the sleeping bag. You don’t want too many changes at once. And the bag might reduce the chance of nightA-time wandering.

Overall though, what’s the rush? If cut and sleeping bag are working, stick with it!

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 12/01/2023 11:08

Good luck with it :)

You can buy long foam cushions with washable covers that go under the bedsheet to help stop them rolling out. We used one recently on holiday where my DD had to sleep in a proper single bed for the first time. It worked really well. Can't remember where we got ours but Amazon sell them.

Familiarize yourself with the controls to move your hole smoothly and efficiently. Quick reflexes Hole IO and precise movements can make a significant difference in your gameplay.
