5 plus wakings a night wanting his dummy

Ds (6 months) only has his dummy at night but for the last few weeks he has started waking at night about 5 or more times wanting his dummy put back in, he then goes back to sleep in about a minute - how can i get him over this and get him to go back to sleep without it or how can I get him to put it back in himself - these constant night wakings are exhausting us

We had this and it was all completely resolved by removing the dummy completely. It took 3 nights and then DD was sleeping all the way through - something she'd never ever done.

Removing the dummy of a child under one is not advised because of SIDS.

He will soon learn to put it in himself - have you thought that his teeth or something are waking him and he is settling for the dummy as something to bite on?

MrsMattie · 05/02/2008 08:18

Really? So the 'official'advice is that all children under one should have dummies? I've never heard that.

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 05/02/2008 08:31

I believe the theory is that with babies who are at high risk of SIDS (e.g. have mothers that smoke and co-sleep etc), then a dummy has been shown to be beneficial.

Don't forget there's also a massive growth spurt at 6 months

colditz · 05/02/2008 16:13

yes, really.

bubblagirl · 05/02/2008 16:33

the dummy myth is it forces baby to breathe differently whilst sucking on dummy less like ly for baby to stop breathing my ds used to wake

it wasnt problem as soon as dummy in he was off again at about 7-8 mths he was able to find himself and pop back in

could he be teething and dummy relieving gums maybe put some bonjela on at bedtime or wehn you go to bed

Poledra · 05/02/2008 16:35

Put more than one dummy in the bed! I used to give my dds 2/3 dummies as then they could always find one when they woke

Lomond · 05/02/2008 16:39

I have this problem too though the frustrating thing is DD tries to get them back and knocks them out of the cot onto the floor! I keep a tub with clean ones next to my bed and get up and down in a dazed state. Can't wait until she can pick them up easier herself!
(she is 7mths)

That article on UNICEF admits that the current theory is inconclusive.

Seona1973 · 05/02/2008 20:03

well I did take ds's dummy away at 5 1/2 months due to multiple wakings and it was the best thing I ever did as ds sleeps so much better without it. Also, from 6 months the risk of cot beath decreases so I felt I was ok to take it away at that stage. (plus I was not a nice person at that point due to lack of sleep)

Dummy Info from SIDS webiste
