11 month naps

Hi, my nearly 11 month old used to reliably have 2 naps a day but recently has started to fight her afternoon nap. She has a morning nap roughly 10-11.15 and then I put her down for her afternoon nap around 2.30, but recently she just chats, rolls around and won't go to sleep. She can do this for up to an hour and a half in her cot, by which time it's too late for a nap. Then she's a nightmare at bedtime and wakes loads in the night because she's overtired. This has been going on nearly two weeks now, with this happening about half the time. Is this just a phase? Does anyone have any advice? Thanks 😊

Sounds like she's ready to drop the afternoon nap. Bring bedtime forward a bit if you can to ease the grouchyness and wait for her to adapt. The inbetweeny times are the hardest.

I also have an 11 month old and have been through similar.
We are now down to one long nap per day (on most days - sometimes she reverts back). Her nap is now later around 12pm - 2pm and she goes to bed at 6.30pm.
Perhaps try one nap and see how it goes? We found it stopped the before bed fussiness but she was tired enough and went down easily at bedtime.
It's a transition and you'll work it out xx

Thanks both!

@BabyMomma2021 what time does your LO wake with the 6:30pm bedtime? I worry that a too early bedtime will result in early waking.

She's just been in her cot 1h 40 minutes this afternoon and no sleep!! Perfectly happy and she looked very close a few times. Yes perhaps it's time to go down to one nap?! It feels too early to do that though. Anyone had any success with calling the first nap? We tried that for a while but then she seemed happier with two roughly 1h20min naps.

*capping the first nap!

She wakes up at 8am, naps 12-2 then bed by 6.30 (slight variation day to day but this is the jist)

Previously her naps were similar to what you described in your first post. We also tried capping naps as with 2 naps she wasn't tired for the second if she slept too long in the morning.

It's hard as by trial and error you risk an unsettled day for everyone but might be worth testing some things out.

Don't worry too much about their age either, just take their lead and see. That's my approach anyway :) xx

Mine dropped a nap at that age (the morning one). At first I was a bit anxious about it but she now has a much longer nap which works better for both of us.

Thanks @BabyMomma2021 that's very helpful! Wow does she sleep through from 6:30 to 8?!

Thanks for replying @DuchessofSandwich. What time would your LO's nap be roughly when she was 11 months?

No hahaha! She wakes and has to be resettled a few times. But she does go back down quickly so I'm glad of that!

ramblerambleramble · 16/12/2022 15:58

Ah that's good at least that she goes back down quickly @BabyMomma2021

My DD slept ok last night despite the skipped nap. She was fighting her afternoon nap again today. So frustrating because I could see on the monitor that she was so so close a few times but the she started rolling around again. She's finally gone to sleep now but it's a bit late for a nap really 😕

My 11 month old's naps have also gone a bit haywire recently @ramblerambleramble (gone from 2 clockwork naps to fighting the morning nap and lots of tears every time he's put in the cot). Just wondered if you've tried the switch to one nap yet, and if you have, how did you go?

Lilz0991 · 20/12/2022 11:41

*how did it go?

ramblerambleramble · 20/12/2022 19:07

Hi @Lilz0991
I've actually decided to persist with the two naps, just pushed the second one slightly later. So she currently does

7 wake up
10-11:15ish nap 1
3-4:15ish nap 2
7:30ish bedtime

The last two days have gone well so I'm hoping she's settling back into it. (Just in time for it all to get messed up again when we travel over Christmas..) I think part of the problem was that she kept rolling onto her front but was not used to sleeping on her front. Once she managed to go to sleep on her front her naps improved.
