Throwing favourite teddy - do I go in to give it back to him or not?

DS nearly one has just started throwing his favourite teddy out of the cot when he's playing before he goes to sleep. He then can't get to sleep as it's the one that he cuddles up to. He's usually really good at going down for naps but recently has been crying because he can't sleep without bear. Do you think I should go back in to give it to him - which might become a game - or just ignore him and hope he soon figures that he better hang on to the teddy?

I would give it back to him the first time then explain that if he throws it out again you wont put it back in the cot and teddy will have to stay on the floor.
I'm sure there will be tears but he will throw it out of the cot everytime he wants you in the room.A very dangerous game to play.

Thanks nobodysfool. I think I know really that I don't want to enter into the game but if he's not settling it's hard to listen even though I know it's self inflicted. Maybe the only answer is to make sure he's shattered every time he goes to bed!

he's not even one. You can't explain anything he will understand. Give the teddy back with no eye contact - he will get bored of this game.

Sorry should say - give it back and immediately leave the room.

That's what I tried this morning colditz, went in, didnt' say anything but just gave back teddy, lay him down and walked out again. He chucked it out twice but then started crying like he had thrown him out but was hugging him tight when I went in. He's just a cheeky monkey He only seems to do it at nap time so far rather than bedtime. I'm sure he'll soon grow out of it but that's what I'm trying to make sure happens hence my questioning

Is he in a grobag? Maybe you could secure teddy to the sleeping bag using a very short length of ribbon or a clip (like you get for dummies)?

Hi Megbusset, hadn't thought of that. He likes to sleep with his head on the teddy (not nice when he has a runny nose and teddy ends up streaky green!) so could that be a problem with ribbon bit ending up round his neck?

I don't think 1.5 inches of ribbon with strangle him.

MegBusset · 02/02/2008 22:56

TBH it would have to be a very short ribbon, I am super-paranoid about that kind of thing in the cot! But there might be some other way of fastening teddy to him... velcro?

SmudgeMum · 02/02/2008 22:59

Or if I don't wash teddy for a while, he will be stuck to him with snot Thanks for the ideas, I will look out some ribbon or a dummy clip
