Baby Whisperer sleep training / pick-up-put-down

Planning to start trying this tonight after 2 months of no sleep .... Tips/experience please?

In particular, do you put him back down as soon as he stops crying, or as soon as he's calm (not always the same thing)? And for a baby who keeps sitting up, do I stay in the room with him after putting him down, in order to catch him sitting up and put him straight back down again, or do I leave the room as long as he's lying down, and return only if he cries? (Sometimes he'll sit up and be quite happy for a while till he remembers he's tired.)

I think the idea is to put him down once he's calm, not immediately he stops crying, and continue doing whatever calmed him for a few minutes (singing, stroking his head or whatever). I then withdraw but sit and watch him for a couple of minutes to make sure he stays calm, then leave.
What happens if he sits up? Will he lie down again or does it always lead to more tears? If it will inevitably lead to tears I would be inclined to lie him back down before he gets worked up again.

He never lies himself down again. Either he gets upset straightaway, or he's happy sitting up - sometimes for ages! - and then eventually gets sick of it and cries. It's the sitting-but-happy scenario I'm unsure of - I know he's tired, but it takes a while before he remembers he is!

I guess if he's lying but happy I leave him, and if he's sitting but happy I lay him down again?

?

Yes, in that case I would try and lie him down again as he will become unhappy in the end and you'll have to start the whole calming process all over again.

ok, will keep lying him down regardless
