10 month old constantly waking around 4.30am

Hi!!

My baby will be 10 months old in a couple of days and for the past 3 weeks or so he persists to want to get up at around 4.30am.
He's a light sleeper in the day and wants to go to bed by 6pm.

We've tried to keep him up until 7pm and still he's waking up super early! I try to get him back to sleep but he kicks off sometimes he's still tired but refuses to go back.

Any advice? Is this just a phase. He used to be a lot better waking up around 5.30am which I can cope with (I gotta get up to work then anyway lol)

Thanks in advance 😊

All of mine have done this, and I hate to say it was a long phase! I went to bed earlier and was exhausted. You have my sympathy.

My kids are early risers. Always have been. Will most likely always will be.

I have done everything I could possibly think of to change this and they still always wake up around the same time regardless of what we do that day and what time they go to bed.

I have just accepted it now, in some ways it’s handy as I never have to drag them out of bed the way I remember my parents having to drag my sister out of bed during my childhood. They are already awake so I can just start getting them ready when I need to.

In my experience looking at my kids and other kids I know. Most do go through this phase, some grow out of it/ can have their sleep pattern altered, and some of them are just naturally larks and will get up early regardless of any other factors.

@Mylesmomma did you manage to sort this at all? Same issue here!

Mine was an early riser too. I ended up going to be really early to retain some sanity.

Around 7 or 8 it became 6.00 am and she was able to get her own breakfast/watch tv which helped.

At around 12 she's decided she likes late nights and is hard to rouse in the morning!!!

flightless55 · 03/01/2024 05:38

When mine was doing this it was because they were cold - just a thought?

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 03/01/2024 05:41

Could be the cold at that time. Though mine just turned out to be early risers. Probably not what you want to hear, i5 took a couple years but they mostly sleep till 6am now. The occasional 7am which feels like an early waking.

Petrie99 · 03/01/2024 06:36

What time are they going to sleep? We had a phase of this and it was caused by too early a bedtime for his sleep needs. He does best with only 10.5/11hrs max overnight so we now put to bed at 7.30/45 for a wake up anytime after 6.15. He did struggle at first but we gradually moved things up and now don't let him do his first nap before 9.30 no matter what time he wakes, to help keep thinfs on track

flea101 · 03/01/2024 06:39

Mine is 8 years old and is still an early riser. Usually before 3am!! I go to bed early, means I don't get an evening but I am not exhausted!

Gosh flea. Before 3 is extreme. I think I’d speak to your GP. Something like melatonin could help.

OP I would make sure your baby is warm enough as PP have said, also search ‘wake to sleep’ - basically if they are consistently waking at an undesirable time you half wake them a bit before and then they start a new sleep cycle. Also maybe look at his nap, is it too long/too late/too early?

There are babies who are larks and wake early, but before 5/5.30 is not early morning it’s night. I reckon it’s a phase. Hope you can fix it!

Yes he is on melatonin and under the sleep clinic.

Gah, sorry to hear that, although glad you have been offered help. I hope it improves for him (and you!) at some point. Please disregard the clumsy post.

Moier · 03/01/2024 17:23

Does he wake up in the night? Or just this once early? If so you are very lucky. A lot of babies wake up a few times in the night for feeds/ nappy change/ cuddle ...still at this age.

amylou8 · 03/01/2024 17:29

I'm afraid I still do this at 47. I'm in bed by 8...9 if I'm really pushing it, and 5am is a lie in...this morning was 3.15. Something to do with a short circadian rhythm apparently. Hopefully it's just a phase for your little one!!

Not a problem! I didn't explain myself (sleep addled brain!)
