How big is your floor bed?

My nearly 6 month old has just started crawling and during playtime keeps trying to pull himself up so it’s time to lower the cot before he figures it out in the middle of the night and dives head first out of it. However, I’m only 5ft3 and already struggle with aches and pains as he doesn’t fall asleep independently and has to be transferred when he’s already asleep, I’m not gonna reach when it’s lower. He also comes into bed with me in the early hours as he sleeps terribly and bedsharing is just easier, so now that he’s on the move that’s not so simple either. So I was wondering about converting his cot into a floor bed by lowering the bottom all the way and taking the legs off and one side down. It would only be single bed size that way though so no space for me, and the mattress on my bed is much higher even if I put it on the floor next to the cot bed.

Not sure what the best thing to do would be?

I’m 5 ft 4 and never found it a problem.

Well that’s great for you but I already find it a problem.

For DS once crawling that would've been a nightmare I never would've slept not knowing where he'd crawled off to. I guess the only way you could do it is in a completely empty room with a gate on the door.
If it's the reaching over the bars and down that's an issue can you get a step for you, you should be able to lean over and reach then?

Alternatively if he comes in with you anyway can you sidecar his cot to your bed? So it's like a massive next to me

Yea his room is for sleeping only, the only other things in there is a chest of drawers, so I’ll need to just add safety latches to the drawers and anchor it to the wall. I’ve researched safety proofing the room so that’s not a problem.

There isn’t enough space to sidecar, the whole thing would be too wide. My bed and his cot are now on opposite walls, with his being kind of at the foot of my bed but with enough space to walk through.

What about leaving it as a cot but taking the legs off? Would be much lower for you to reach in then and he wouldn't be able to climb out. Also do you use sleeping bags? They hinder a climber (for a while)

Yeah I could try that! Cause trouble for my 6ft2 husband though 😂

I’m quite attracted to the idea of a floor bed though so I could start getting him used to falling asleep in his own bed by lying next to him. But I’m not so keen on spending £££ on another bed when his cot bed was already pretty pricey 🤦🏼‍♀️ So trying to find a way to still use it. Also when he starts nursery they have floor beds for naps that the kids are free to go to where they want so might make that easier too.

2.5m squared. It was bespoke. Finding sheets and duvets to fit has been expensive.

From what you describe, you would be best getting a double mattress for babys room and doing away with the cot. You're likely to be cosleeinv with him in there full time ultimately, so best to make it comfortable for you both.

I feel you are creating far more extra problems moving away from the cot (as a proper cot) to a floor bed. I'd keep the cot and teach baby to settle to sleep in there.

Hiya, I had this problem as I'm only 5.2 so we had to sell the cotbed we bought and we bought another with one side that we were able to lower them pull back up when baby asleep. I used it for baby 1 and still being used for baby 2. I found it on Facebook marketplace for £50
