Toddler duvet question

Autumnlily14 · 22/10/2022 21:11

Hi all,
My 15 month old has just moved to a toddler bed with a duvet and I'm just wondering what is the safest way for him to sleep?

I've currently got him feet to foot but am worried about this as we have his bed right up against ours until he gets used to it (has never been in own room.) This makes me worried that our duvet would go over his face.

So do I put him at the top of his bed where I can make sure neither of our duvets have covered him or have him feet to foot and just keep waking and checking mine hasn't gone on him?

Thank you.

My DD is 28 months, still in her cot and goes through the night in a sleeping bag. She's warm and safe... why are you in a rush to transition them so quick?

katmarie · 22/10/2022 21:28

At 15 months my kids were absolutely all over the bed during the night, regardless of where I put them to bed, they seemed to do cartwheels in their sleep. I'm not sure it would make much difference where he starts the night, he will wriggle around as he need to in the night.

My 2 and a half year old has just got a duvet (having had a sleeping bag her woke life). I don’t do feet to bottom any more due to her age and also the fact that if I did she just works her way to the top most corner of her bed anyway! Even in sleeping bag.

just me but if you’re worried I’d stick to sleeping bag a while longer.
otherwise maybe cellular blankets as more breathable than duvet or try tucking it in under the matress?

EthicalNonMahogany · 22/10/2022 21:30

I'd stick with a lovely merino wool sleeping bag for a bit longer.

i have 3.5 year old twins, DD1 has been in a ikea day bed with a bed guard for a couple of months, but she is a sound sleeper and rarely moves much during the night, DD2 has only just had the sides taken off her cotbed. She was a nightmare and would cover every square inch of that cot each night.

15 months is so so young to be out of the cot, did you have issues with him climbing out? Personally I’d keep them inside the cot for as long as you can

Autumnlily14 · 22/10/2022 21:33

I appreciate the messages. I'd love to stick with a sleeping bag but as soon as he wakes he tries to stand and jump about and I'd be worried about him falling so in that respect it's safer with the duvet.

They’re usually perfectly able to stand and walk (sack race style) in a sleeping bag, but if you’re worried you can get ones with feet.

Hugasauras · 22/10/2022 21:40

Slumbersac sleeping bags with legs.

If your worried about your duvet going over him maybe put him in his own bed in his own room. Toddler duvet and pillow is fine for his age

PurpleFlower1983 · 21/11/2022 06:28

Stick with a sleeping bag.

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 21/11/2022 06:46

If you are only worried about your duvet, why not spin him round, so his feet are up by your pillow. Does that put his head in a better place?

We stopped with feet to foot when we transitioned to a cot bed (not quite as early as you, but DS1 was just shy of his second birthday and DS2 was 18 months) as there was too much duvet, even putting it sideways, to do anything else.

Apollonia1 · 21/11/2022 07:07

I've 2.9 year old twins. It was only a couple of weeks ago that I transitioned from from a sleepsac to a duvet. You can get sleepsacs with feet (Eg Tommee Tippee stepees).

Hi @Autumnlily14 I know this thread is a month or so old but just wanted to say that I think I have a similar set up to you and keeping DS in cot and sleeping bag as long as possible doesn’t work for us either. 14mo DS is in his cot bed with the side off and attached to our bed on the open side. He has a toddler duvet also.

We have this set up because he climbed out of the cot at 9months but he can get off our bed safely so this was the best option for us.

We moved to a toddler duvet as we are planning to transition him to his own room soon and he grew out of all his sleeping bags about 3months ago and I didn’t want to buy new ones for the sake of a couple of months.

I keep the duvets separate by tucking mine underneath me. I don’t worry about where he goes in the cot as he fidgets a lot. If I wake up and he has the duvet off and seems cold I’ll just pull it up for him. Most of the time when he has wiggled out of the duvet it’s because he is warm so not really an issue.

Autumnlily14 · 21/11/2022 07:39

Almondcroissant12 thank you for sharing. We pretty much immediately had to get rid of his duvet as his temp soared to a roaring 40°. Took him out of duvet and had settled back to normal within 2 hours so definitely duvet. Ds didn't like blankets either so ended up buying sleeping bags with legs. None of this improved sleep until I read about how SAD in adults can cause insomnia... Thought it was worth a shot and made sure Ds was getting vit d and bright sunlight in day and all was fixed until last week. Ds is suddenly fidgeting loads at night and unsettled with crying so ?

Oh wow, so glad you were keeping g an eye and spotted the temperature spike.

Lots of outdoor time and natural sunlight does tend to mean a good night for us too.

Sorry it’s not going well again though. Does yours have his molars? That has been the cause of our sleep disruption lately.

Autumnlily14 · 21/11/2022 11:58

Almondcroissant12 I know I don't even know how I knew to check but so glad I did. No he doesn't. He's got all his front ones and he's definitely teething so it's got to be those coming through but honestly don't know what's causing it. He has reflux, a cold, he's teething and seems to keep having yellowish/brown poo more often than normal so kind of at a loss. It's good to know that could definitely be because of his teeth though! Thanks
