12 month old waking for dummy

My little boy has always been a pretty dreadful sleeper. I Night-weaned him about three weeks ago, and now he wakes up three or more times a night crying, but settles back to sleep almost immediately when I put his dummy back in and give him a sip of water. Very rarely we get a 6 hour stretch of uninterrupted sleep, but I frequently find myself being woken every two hours. I'm back at work now and am absolutely shattered. How can I discourage this behaviour??? I usually put a couple of dummies in the cot with him at night so he can grab one and pop it back in, but either he doesn't find them or he has chucked them all out...

Put lots in cot. We have about 20. Pile at the top and bottom and a couple scattered around.... she normally sleeps at top or bottom. Also I wake in night for about an hour so I go in pick some up and pop them back in.

Water - leave a cup in there. And when lo wakes show lo where cup is to be able to encourage to get themselves

Those sound like good ideas! Thanks! I never wanted to give him a dummy in the first place but unfortunately he was so distressed with colic when he was a newborn that a health visitor actually advised me to try him on one. Worked a treat but now he is too attached to his dummies! Sigh ..

Hahaha yes I know what you mean about the dummy. It's great when they use it to help self soothe though! My only other bit of advice as we left it too late. Make sure lo doesn't have in the day just for naps and bedtime. My lo became obsessed with it in day and wouldnt go anywhere. It was a nightmare. Also effected her speech. She's only starting to catch up now.

I don't think I would really offer the water though unless lo is really needing it. As could cause issues as lo gets older 🤔 with potty training. Leaking through nappy etc. I hope that makes sense what I'm trying to say.

A nightlight or something so he can see enough to find his dummy's?

Might not be helpful but we switched to a mesh sided cot rather than bars, other reasons, but side effect is she can't throw dummies out anymore.

I wouldn't offer water either - he doesn't need it and that's not a habit you want to start! Ditto re have more dummies in the cot so that even if a few fall out he can find them. If you do have to go in, put the dummy by his hand or into it so that he has to put it in his mouth himself. He should crack it soon. I very rarely have to go into our 14 month old now.

i thought I was on to a winner when I piled extra dummies in the cot 😬 but I woke up to DS frantically shouting “mumma, mumma, mumma!”, rushed into his room and he’s standing in the middle of the cot holding both hands out at me and proudly shouts with a huge smile “TWO DUMMIES” 🙄🤣

The next time we tried it he found a second dummy while he was half asleep and had an absolute meltdown because he couldn’t get it in his mouth. He already had one in 🙈🤣

We’re a 1 dummy at night household now 🤣
