Outgrown the travel cot, what next?

My DC1 is still in a standard cot at home and will be for a long time yet.

We have a John Lewis travel cot and DC1 now can only fit diagonally in it, bumping the sides constantly every turn, waking up then ofc too, so I'm pretty sure it's safe to say it's outgrown.

What next for nights away and holidays? DC1 isn't ready for a single bed yet and isn't a good co-sleeper anymore either, wriggling and rotates and is upside down of off the end of the bed so no-one gets any chance of sleep.

Do they make bigger travel costs for toddlers or older babies? DC1 is 23m and on the 50th centile for H&W. What do others do?

Thanks

We had something a bit like this

You can get “toddler ready beds” that are inflatable

Single mattress on floor/blow up mattress on floor, or in a single bed with side guard up.

But my DD was never a wanderer or a particularly danger loving child, and I could be pretty confident she'd stay.

Hauck play travel cot is almost cot bed size

We have one of the little life tents, plenty of space and a safe place for wanderers

Travel stair gate on the bedroom door and move anything which could be dangerous out of the room. Can he not climb out of a cot at that nearly 2?

Goldbar · 01/09/2022 08:58

Intex blow up bed with rim around it has been good for us. The rim stops restless sleepers from falling out and our almost 5yo is still sleeping in it. It does take up quite a lot of space though!

Otherwise, maybe get a bigger travel cot? You can find travel cots up to 120cm and our DC slept happily in one until around 3.5 (DC very big/tall for age!). Can't remember the brand though (will check) but it was a fairly basic one and we took an extra folding mattress for it.

Second a little life tent - we had one because it was very portable (no car) but it was quite spacious and the kids used it until they 3.5. our eldest DC never climbed out of his cot, so we didn't move him out of a cot until quite late (when it was need for his little brother).

Escaping isn't a problem, my question was what to sleep on when outgrown the travel cot and not ready for a single bed yet. I didn't know travel stairgates were a thing though, I'll bear in mind if we ever need stairgates.

Thank you all for the suggestions, I'll look at the blowup toddler bed things, the little life tent things, and the hauck travel cot

They can go in a bed as soon as they grow out of the cot. If you are worried about them rolling out then there are travel bed guards, or you can roll up a towel and put it under the sheet or if you are really worried you can put the matress on the floor. I could be wrong but I think most kids just go straight from a cot, travel or otherwise, to a single bed. Mine did and so did all of my friends.

MolliciousIntent · 02/09/2022 09:35

What do you mean by "not really

MolliciousIntent · 02/09/2022 09:36

Urgh.

"Not ready for a single bed" ?

SBAM · 02/09/2022 09:39

We have the Hauck dream and play travel cots, they take a standard 70x140 cot mattress so should be big enough, and can sometimes be had quite cheaply from aldi/Lidl on their kids special events.
My very tall 2y9m old still fits fine in one, and he sleeps in a toddler bed at home but was fine with having the cot at grandmas last month.

Not all hotel rooms have space to put the mattress on the floor, nor are the rooms safe or readily made safe.
