9 month old awake for hours!

maskedmother · 14/08/2022 22:18

Please help! My 9 month old usually sleeps well, 10-12 hours in his own room. 2 naps a day for 1 hour 30 mins. He's been waking at 8am lately so we've been aiming for 8-8. However the last week or so, after his second nap he is then awake for around 6 hours before he goes down for the night! He's tired but just won't sleep. He's not particularly whingy either, more hyper and playful. I don't really know what's causing it or how to get back to normal 🤦🏻‍♀️ I want my evenings back!

Not many (read: a tiny minority) of 9 months old sleep for 12h at night, no matter what the sleep training industry says. 8am is also a pretty late start in the morning in baby terms. I think your expectations are probably off to be honest. At 9 months old, I’d probably expect a bedtime between 9pm and 10pm for a 8am start. Do they nap for 2 x 1.5 hours or 1.5 hours in total?

Discovereads · 14/08/2022 22:51

Your baby is growing up that’s what is causing it. The older they get, the less sleep they need. 8pm to 8am is very long for a 9mo old.

maskedmother · 14/08/2022 22:57

@AliceW89 he's been sleeping for 12 hours since around 6 months old (with the odd bad night here and there) so it's quite normal for him. He used to sleep 7-7:30. But recently been fighting sleep more and more. It's not the length he's sleeping for That's bothering me, it's the amount of time it's taking him to fall asleep. It's 22:57 now and he's still awake. He woke from his last nap at 3pm...

@Discovereads I'm not necessarily expecting 8-8, however he used to sleep 7-7 so that's what I was used to.

Your point about needing less sleep as they get older is bollocks though, sorry.

First baby is it?

@Discovereads no he is my 3rd.

That table includes daytime sleep, you realise that yes? Of course they grow out of day time naps. I'm talking about night time sleep, which going by your screenshot is perfectly normal until they're in their teens.

Of course I realise that, I was talking about total sleep. As were you as you listed the day time sleep and the night time sleep in your OP? You literally put ALL his sleep in your OP.

So why are you pretending now you were only talking about night time sleep?

Ah, don’t bother answering that. Not interested, you swore at me for nothing and you’re going to say whatever it takes to justify it. So I’m done.

ChittyBang1987 · 15/08/2022 01:02

I read somewhere that sleep occurs around 13 hours after waking. It may be that sleep needs are changing and can't do 12 hours anymore over night. Or it could simply be the heat. I'm awake, my lo isn't. It's hot and I feel like dipping my self in an ice bath. Think I would reevaluate in few days time.

Muststopeating · 15/08/2022 01:12

3 kids... all slept 11/12 hours a night from approx 9 months. With some glitches (currently awake cos 12 month old is having a bad night).

My only suggestion is reevaluate naps. We had to move from 2 naps to 1 quite early with DD3. 1 big nap in middle of day.

How many total hours daytime sleep are they having?

Absolutely no chance would I be putting a 9 month old to bed at 9/10pm.

Other suggestion would be to wake up at 7am... no matter how counter intuitive it seems.

@Discovereads im not really sure why you bothered commenting in the first place? I literally put my 9 Mo usually sleeps anywhere between 10-12 hours at night, you commented stating 12 hours is way too long for a 9 month old to sleep. However you then proceeded to post a table which actually says 12 hours at night is perfectly normal for a 9 month old.

I hardly swore at you, I just said the point you made was bollocks, which it was.
Then you made the sarcy comment assuming I was a first time mum and didn't know what I was talking about, which has made you look very silly considering you contradicted your first comment by posting that table. Anyway, have a good day 😁

@Muststopeating thanks so much! I've actually thought about maybe dropping a nap, as I struggle to fit 2 in at the moment. But it just seems so early to do that.
He usually has 2 naps, both around 1 hour and 30 mins each.

But you may be right, it could also be the heat so I will give it a while and see if what happens.

No I don't agree with the 9-10pm bedtime either! Way too late.

I did consider waking him up at 7 every day, I've just been enjoying the lay ins lately 😂.

Thanks for your comment though, very helpful x

Its a short thread, it’s not hard to see that I wrote “12hrs is very long” not “12 hours is way too long”. It’s also not hard to see that per the table I posted the 15hrs per day that your DC sleeps is at the upper limit of normal sleep for their age.

And the point you swore about wasn’t the #hrs of sleep your DC as you’re trying to claim now, but
Your point about needing less sleep as they get older is bollocks

And in fact DC do need fewer hours of sleep as they get older. Reference the table.

Youre welcome for the table though, I’m sure it will give you reassurance that your DC being awake for 6 whole hours! in the afternoon being all hyper and playful is in fact perfectly normal at that age.

My Dd always woke around 8am, and i certainly wasn't doing anything to change that! I always preferred having her awake later in the evening so i got the lie ins in the morning.

I used to carry on and put DD to bed at usual time, she would happily play and chatter in her cot for a while some nights before falling asleep, or if she really wasn't tired i would just keep her up a little longer as then i could enjoy my evening downstairs watching tv etc, not stuck upstairs.

Hyper might mean over tired, what time ia the 2nd nap?

ljdxxx · 15/08/2022 08:52

I have a nine month old and he sleeps through 8pm till 7/8 am in the morning with the old day or night where he will wake. He has 2 naps one at 10/10:30am till about 11:30/12am and then he will have another around 3pm till about 4/430pm just depends when he's tired then we are in the bedroom having his last bottle at 8pm and he's always asleep for 8:30pm.

So many just juggle babies naps around I don't think you need to move his bedtime later x

converseandjeans · 15/08/2022 09:15

Get him up at 7 & do one long nap of 2 hours 12-2. It sounds like he's getting too much sleep over the whole day. You either have 3 hours nap and 9-10 hours at night or one nap and 12 hours at night.

maskedmother · 15/08/2022 09:21

@converseandjeans

If I woke him up at 7, he would never stay awake until 12. He's usually ready for his first nap after 2 and half hours of waking in the morning. Do you think cutting his first nap short would work?
It's only been the last week or so he's been like this, before he slept 3 hours a day and then 12 hours at night. So could be the heat or I need to tweak his day naps a bit.

He didn't wake until 8:30 this morning and I let him sleep as he didn't go to sleep until 11pm last night 😴. Il try waking him at 7 over the next few days and see if that works.

Reduce the day time naps, I'd go for a shorter 45 mins to 1hr nap early mid morning (10am ish) then a longer nap over lunch (1hr 30 - 2hrs), then if night sleep becomes difficult again reduce the morning nap gradually until it's down to 15 mins and preserve the long lunch nap as much as you can.

shiningstar2 · 15/08/2022 09:42

All babies are different. If he is sleeping well at night and is mostly content when awake during the day I do think he needs less sleep during the day. I know 9 months seems early to need a bit less sleep during the day but babies don't read the manuals and don't all conform to what's usual. If he is a good sleeper at night I would concentrate; n keeping that good routine going and just accept he isn't going to sleep as much during the day. When this first starts it's a real miss for getting things done or a bit of down time yourself I know, but the alternative is worse, struggling everyday to get a reluctant baby to nap. You could put him in the stroller maybe and have a walk somewhere. If he's overtired and really needs that nap he would probably sleep then. If not then you know you are having to adapt to a new phase with him.

converseandjeans · 15/08/2022 18:13

Do you think cutting his first nap short would work?

I used to I think put mine for nap 9-9.45 then wake them up & then they would nap 12-2.

I don't think it's popular on here to suggest waking them up from a nap. But they would then go to bed earlier.

Even as a small baby DS would sleep really well all night but only ever for 11 hours. So I think we used to put him down around 7.30-8.00.

maskedmother · 15/08/2022 18:32

@converseandjeans I woke him up after 45 mins this morning, his second nap he then slept for an 1 hour and 20 mins in the pram (he never sleeps as long in the pram). He didn't wake up until 8:30 this morning either so will see what time I can get him down. I'm going to wake him at 7am tomorrow aswell and stick to that each morning, see if that makes a difference. 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
