4 week old suddenly won't sleep

My 4 week old has been such a good sleeper so far. Will go 2-3 hour stretches during the day and would wake 1-2 a night for a feed. So far I've been able to get him to sleep by feeding/holding/rocking and then putting him in his cot when he's asleep and he's been quite happy there. During the night he just goes straight back down to sleep like a dream.

Last night however he didn't go to sleep like usual around 6pm and then started crying, falling asleep for 5-15 mins then waking up and crying again and this went on until 10.30pm. He slept really well after that and only woke at 3pm and then 7.30am. He went back to sleep for his morning nap around 8.30am and then slept for around 2 hours. Since he's been awake from then we are having a repeat of last night, falling asleep for a very short period and then waking up and crying uncontrollably and I'm not able to get him to stay asleep and its extremely hard to settle him. I'm finding the crying hard to bare and then I'm terrified that he's staying awake so long. I've tried a sling, a walk in the pram, feeding, rocking but nothing seems to work.

Can someone tell me why he won't stay asleep? Why has this happened what seems overnight? My DC1 had reflux and cried all the time but with DC2 it just doesn't seem normal from what he's been like the past 4 weeks? Is it normal for there just to be a switch in sleep like this? I'm finding it very hard to cope while looking after DC1 as well!

Yep, totally normal. Put it down to a developmental / growth spurt. Sorry, but they will keep on changing the rules on you.

You've done nothing wrong. Your baby isn't broken. You've not messed up or created bad habits.

Chances are your baby is about to grow out of all their clothes, is developing a skill or possibly coming down with a cold. You won't know until next week which of these things it is, but it's really unsettling when you think you're doing ok and then everything changes.
