4 week old baby - makes lots of noises/grunting sounds when sleeping.

Only at night does she do this. During the day when she sleeps, she doesn't really make any sounds unless she's stretching

During the night it is CONSTANT grunts, snorts, blowing bubbles, all kinds of mad sounds all night long.
All the noises keep me awake, and I keep checking on her constantly as I'm worried she's choking or can't breathe or something.

Is this normal to be making so much noise when sleeping?
She's almost 4 weeks now and has been doing this for a couple of weeks.

Could you ask the Health Visitor or midwife- maybe take a video to show them...?

OldYork · 05/08/2022 05:19

Mine were the same and I used to get so upset because I thought they were uncomfortable …I was assured it is just their little digestive systems getting up and running and with both, they stopped doing it by about 12 weeks…..but it was a long 12 weeks! You’ve brought back some memories there! Both of them perfectly happy healthy wee ones that grew into happy healthy big ones 😁

Hugasauras · 05/08/2022 05:20

Sounds pretty normal. I remember being amazed by all the grunting with DD1! I'm lying beside DD2 right now who is 6wo and also grunting Grin

Totally normal. It’s gas - are you winding her after night feeds? It’s so much harder to get a burp up if a baby is sleeping and in the night the trapped burps travel through their digestive system. They’re too young to have learnt how to fart without grunting and making a huge fuss - they haven’t yet learnt to push down with their abdominal muscles and relax their anus at the same time.

listening to my 6 week old do some excellent grunting and farting as we speak

Both of mine did this for the newborn stage. It’s totally normal IME. Bloody annoying though!

I remember this. I sometimes thought it was like having an old man move in with us, not a lovely little baby!

BumbleBumbleB · 05/08/2022 05:47

Helpful to read this, my newborn is the same!

Fleur405 · 05/08/2022 05:47

Pretty standard baby behaviour!

RoseValleyRambles · 05/08/2022 05:48

Ours is the same. Apparently it's just the result of tiny nasal passages, if nothing else seems to be wrong. Think it can also be a symptom of reflux or cmpa. He's improving now at 7 weeks.

MamaBear1022 · 05/08/2022 05:48

Yep. DS did this as a newborn and then outgrew it. He's coming up 4 months and doesn't do it now. We use to call it the farmyard hour as he sounded like a goat/pig

GretaVanFleet · 05/08/2022 06:12

My DS was the same, I couldn’t get him in his own room quick enough!

needthezzzzz · 05/08/2022 08:23

Thank you all for your replies. It's definitely like all have suggested above - living with a goat, pig and an old man all rolled into one. Very vocal. But glad to know it seems very common.

Yes we used to call it the farmyard time and they sounded like all kids of animals. Only at night though. Very normal

Perfect28 · 05/08/2022 08:36

Normal but nobody ever tells you !

GinnyBee · 07/08/2022 07:35

Yep, newborns spend a lot of time in active sleep and make all sorts of noises and wriggle around, more towards the morning hours. It stops eventually when their sleep matures and they start spending more time in quiet sleep. But for weeks you'll have a tiny dinosaur in the room with you!

Mine is almost 13 weeks and last night was the first time he didn't wake me up with his grunting and straining at 3-4am and slept quietly until 6am! He's been sleeping 6-8 hours overnight for several weeks now but the last few hours are NOISY! so I don't get to enjoy those long stretches much 😂
