Dropping to one nap when your child wakes 5.30am

Does anyone have any advice how to drop to one nap when your child is waking 5.30am?

Trust me I've tried EVERYTHING for early wakes over the past four months.

Signs so far he's ready to drop a nap:

  • Taking longer to fall asleep for naps
  • Taking AGES to fall asleep for second nap even after reducing first nap
  • reduce first nap to 30 mins and still struggling with second nap
  • finding it hard to fit two naps in because then bedtime is too late and he's waking early

However I know the ideal time is like 12/1-2/3

He won't be able to stretch that long! Waking up so early.

Any advice for mums who dropped to one nap with an early riser? Also when did you schedule in lunch?

How old is the child?

How old is baby? Sounds like they're getting too much daytime sleep if keeps waking early/going to bed late, so you're probably doing the right thing. Could also be a sleep regression if he's younger than 1

Have nap about 11am. If they're up early then you can give them a light lunch just before. Mine used to fall asleep in the high chair though.

Also, don't let then sleep later than 3.30pm if you want them in bed for 7pm. That was always my rule.

Yep definitely time to transition to 1 nap. Mine was the exact same age. Like a pp said start by doing 11am nap then an early night. After a few weeks, you'll be able to have them awake after midday then asleep at 12/1. Let us know if his night sleep improves x

We did lots of back and forth between 1 and 2 naps from 1 year old. One day she seems ready and next she's not.

When my lo is at home (16 months and attends nursery and doesn't have a morning nap there) she has 10 to 15 mins to the minute around 945 to 10am. we found 30 mins was too much too and wouldnt go down for afternoon nap until 130pm sometimes later. Then 1245pm to 1250pm we pop her back down. Awake by 3pm. Asleep by 8pm to 815pm. Awake between 630am and 7am.

I'm surprised you managed to keep two naps in for so long! 🤣.

Definitely one nap. I found for us an afternoon one worked better usually around 1pm.

@ChittyBang1987

Yeah so I've tried to wake him at 20 mins, but he's in such a deep sleep he literally wouldn't wake, tried music and to stir him, curtains o open! Think he's in such a deep sleep at 30 mins.

Unless I possibly do a nap on the go x

Yep. It can be hard, especially as only been asleep for 15 mins (i can see on camera when she drops off) We have pink noise so as soon as I turn that off she's awake. The other way is if lo has a dummy when sleeping i take it out of her mouth. Picking her up is another one too and speaking saying we're going out as she loves to go out.

Yes on the go sounds good..... give it a go. My lo wouldn't do that unless tired as anything

My daughter is 20 months, our schedule is roughly:
5.30am wake, milk
7.00 breakfast
11.30-12ish lunch
12.30-2 nap
5pm - tea
6pm start bath
7pm sleep

This is roughly the same everyday inc nursery

Just remember any changes you make can cause lo to be a little grumpy and takes 3 weeks to reset their internal rhythm.
