Hi my newborn is 3 days old. Is there such thing as too much sleep?? . He sleeps through feeds. Sleeps all day. Rarely stays awake. Also im struggling to breastfeed. He latches, takes a few sucks, then stops. Im scared hes going to lose weight. The midwife has not come out to see me. Please help

Congratulations on your baby!

Has he been checked for jaundice? My daughter was diagnosed with jaundice on day 3. She wasn't obviously yellow (as I'd assumed jaundice to be lol) but showed up on a blood test. Excessive sleepiness was her only symptom

RandomQuest · 09/07/2022 18:05

Yes some newborns are very sleepy but if he’s also not feeding properly then I’d get urgent advice unless you’re going to give formula. Have you been given a contact number for the midwife and/or can you call the ante natal ward?

Hugasauras · 09/07/2022 18:08

They do sleep a lot but if he's not feeding regularly and properly then call the ward who discharged you. You might need to go back in to test for jaundice and get some help with feeding.

bumpytrumpy · 09/07/2022 18:10

Yea, you should get a visit on day 5 but if he's not waking to feed then might be worth asking for help sooner.

My first was like this. We had to strip him naked to feed, change nappy half way through, tickle his feet to keep him awake. Feed at 3hr intervals, don't let him sleep all day until you're confident he'll wake when he needs to. If you can pump and cup feed after he's finished on the breast that will help too.

collieresponder88 · 09/07/2022 18:10

If he isn't taking enough milk then you need to get him seen by a doctor

Bsmirched · 09/07/2022 18:11

Are you getting plenty of wet nappies? My firstborn was very sleepy initially and I used to have to try all sorts to keep him awake - tickling his feet, blowing his face etc. As others have said, I'd definitely get in touch with the midwives.

Rba2022 · 09/07/2022 18:21

@WithOneLook @Bsmirched @bumpytrumpy @collieresponder88 @Hugasauras @RandomQuest thank you all for the advice. I dont have any contacts fr midwife. Also he hasnt weed in 12 hours

If he really hasn't weed for 12 hours take him to hospital now- he sounds dehydrated and that can be dangerous in such a young baby.

He will be just fine and you will get support you need for feeding but please don't delay taking him.

bumpytrumpy · 09/07/2022 18:27

Are you in the U.K.?

the numbers are on your green notes.

you must know which hospital you went to. Google the switchboard number and ask for postnatal ward.

or A&E would be appropriate.

Hugasauras · 09/07/2022 18:28

You need to call the hospital now. You should have been told what to do when you were discharged.

ApolloandDaphne · 09/07/2022 18:31

My DD2 was jaundiced and very sleepy. By day 10 I could hardly get her to breast feed at all and she wasn't gaining weight and her nappies were barely damp. I was so worried I switched to bottle feeding and she started feeding so much better and having wet nappies. I am not saying you need to switch to bottle feeding but it is an option you can consider.

snowflake29 · 09/07/2022 18:31

Go back to the hospital you were discharged from, they have responsibility for the first couple of weeks I think and your baby sounds like they need medical help quite urgently. Don't mess around with a tiny baby, just go back to the hospital and they will re admit.

bumpytrumpy · 09/07/2022 18:34

I hope this is a wind up. You don't mess around with dehydrated newborns in a heatwave

Rba2022 · 09/07/2022 18:37

@bubumpytrumpy he has weed just now a little.
I bottle feed him every 3 hours

ThelastRolo20 · 09/07/2022 18:42

Honestly if there was a 12 hour gap with a wee I would just head to your nearest a&e - dehydration in such a young baby can be dangerous and can cause kidney issues, they'll want to check baby out even if they've weed since x

WithOneLook · 09/07/2022 18:53

Just go to wherever is closest to you. If you genuinely don't know where to go present to a&e and they will sort it from there.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 09/07/2022 18:55

Your local a and e. Go now. Stop posting on here and go.

pinkunicorns54 · 09/07/2022 19:09

Hope you are on your way to A&E and everything is ok 🤞🏻.
Just some additional info that I wasn't aware of - wake the baby every 2-3 hours for a feed until you have had them weighed (and then until they have regained the birth weight that some babies lose). I had in my head 'never wake a sleeping baby' and didn't know to wake my little one!
Keep and eye on wet nappies, they should be urinating frequently when they are that little!

Sexnotgender · 09/07/2022 19:11

Please take him to A&E, whichever is closest to you. Yes they absolutely can sleep too much.

ChittyBang1987 · 09/07/2022 19:37

Agree with everyone else. ED now please.
Doesn't matter which one, notes are transferable and usually some access online (I work for nhs)

I know a lot of people need to wake up their lo to feed. Could be jaundice to a urine infection with everything in between. Especially with weather I would be concerned, with a newborn.

LapinR0se · 09/07/2022 19:38

Your baby could be dangerously dehydrated. It is hot now. Go to hospital

Rba2022 · 09/07/2022 23:31

Thank you all for the advice. I contacted the hospital, and baby is doing well now. Got lots of info off them too, which i wished was given to me before being discharged from the hospital with baby a few days ago.
