8mo verrrrry grumpy every morning - not enough sleep?

My 8mo wakes up for the day at about 7am each morning and is fine for the first 30 mins or so, I breastfeed him and play etc. Then he is just soooo grumpy, whining and crying until I put him down for his first nap around 9am. I haven't managed giving him breakfast yet because he's too pissed off to sit in his highchair and eat. He falls asleep instantly for his first nap, like he's exhausted. Sometimes I give in and put him down at 8.30ish, but much earlier and it just puts our day all out of whack and doesn't work with my eldest's nursery drop off.

Does this sound like over tiredness? He goes to bed at 6.30pm (trying to push it back later but again, he just seems really tired in the evening and wants to go to bed!). He still wakes in the night between 4-5am for a quick feed. I think something must be a bit off in our schedule for him to be so tired first and last thing, but I'm not sure what.

This is roughly what we do at the moment:
7am - wake
9am - 11am - nap 1
1.30 - 3.30 - nap 2
6.30pm - bed

Some days we do three naps which is:
7am - wake
9-10 - nap 1
12-2 - nap 2
4.00-4.30 - nap 3
7pm - bed

Any advice much appreciated

Please don’t take this the wrong way but he’s just being a baby? He sounds like he’s getting loads of sleep overall and sleeps well at night. Some babies are grumpy (two of mine were - they just liked to be cuddled!). He’s very young so maybe just give him a yoghurt pouch in your arms, let him sit on you and have some finger food or bits of cereal or banana. Try not to worry about it being a “formal” breakfast. It will pass.. soon you will have a crazy two-year-old

That's very good amount of sleep for that age. Mine never did no where near that amount.

I would be giving breakfast bit earlier. Before grumpiness hits so to speak. My lo is like the incredible hulk when she's hungry. If I miss that sweet spot I'm in trouble 😆 🤣

As pp said finger food or pouch when sitting in ur lap.

I would guess hungry, I’d go breakfast straight away if possible

@DSGR haha oh yes I know, I have a crazy two year old as well!

I guess it's just because it's so clear that he's really tired, the rest of the day he's very chilled and happy. But you're right, reading back my schedule I can see he's definitely getting lots of sleep at night and in the day, so he can't be chronically over tired or anything. Guess he's just not a morning (or evening) person!

Is he eating proper meals?

Raggeo · 01/07/2022 14:44

Sounds like he is getting lots of sleep. All babies have different sleep needs but for comparison my 8 month old sleeps 10-11 hours at night then on a good day she takes a 1h nap in the morning and 1.5h nap in afternoon. On a bad day it can be less than an hour for each nap and we are all going mad by bedtime.
We are being hit with a lot of developmental leaps just now and teething so she is often grumpy without any clear reason. My first child was such a calm, chilled baby in comparison. I was lured into a false sense of security 😂

TBC45678 · 01/07/2022 14:56

@LapinR0se yes, though we had quite a slow start with him being interested in food but now he eats two meals a day (salmon, sweet potato, beans etc). He won't be spoon fed so he shovels it in himself which is a bit hit and miss, but in the past few weeks he's definitely eating more than is being dropped. I had been thinking is it a hunger/lack of energy thing, though he's drinking lots of milk still which I know is their main source of calories at this stage.

@Raggeo yes me too, first baby was sooo easy and chilled, slept through from 16 weeks, loved food straight away. Second one is a lot more high maintenance!!
