Floor bed and safety

My DS is 16 months old and sleeping well on a floor bed next to me or my hubby. He no longer needs resettling so we want to see if he sleeps well alone. Any ideas on how to make it safe? Specifically, do we leave the door shut, open slightly or lock it from the outside? We would keep a monitor on in there but how do we do that safely? Any advice much appreciated!

DD had a floor bed in our room till she was about 2 then moved to her own room, which is next to ours, on a single mattress on the floor. We leave our and her doors open and had a stair gate at the top of the stairs till recently.

Not one for floor beds tbh but once the kids were out of their cots we put a stair gate across their door.

As for monitors, you can get some wall mounted ones, but I've found neither of my kids were the slightest bit interested in them. We made sure wires were behind furniture though.

We always had a stair gate on DD's door so i knew she was safe in her room

Thanks for your replies, forgot to mention we're really struggling to get a stair gate to fit as the door opens inwards and the door frame sides where you would attach the stair gate are very narrow! I may just leave his and our door open as they're opposite each other and lock bathroom door, stair gate etc at night.

Absolutely don't lock your child in a room.

I believe bedroom doors shut overnightis better from a fire safety point of view.

Can you put a safety gate anywhere else to stop stair access?

With the monitor - we has a socket behind the wardrobe, so plugged it it, ran the cable up the back, and had the unit sat ontop of the wardrobe!

Thanks, we have a stair gate at top of stairs and can put a lock on bathroom door from outside. So my only concern is him getting his fingers shut in his door or our door... I could use those foam door stoppers but good point about fire safety...

I would just shut the door, mine couldn’t open ours anyway due to the style if door knobs but just in case they do get out I’d keep a stairgate on the landing. I don’t use a monitor beyond about 1- kids are reliable sleeper and the house is small so I’d hear them but if you’d prefer one then run it behind an anchored bit of furniture like a wardrobe and maybe go audio only if you can’t get the video angle right.
