22mo sleep issues

Hello, looking for some advice!

My 22mo has never been a fantastic sleeper but we had seen some real progress at 18 months when I stopped bfeeding and she started sleeping through consistently around 10-11 hours a night. We then went on holiday a month ago and she was in a cot in room with us. On coming home she was poorly and also had some teething going on. Having been able to do the bedtime routine and walk out of the room and her fall asleep, she now needs one of us to stay with her to fall asleep, sitting by cot. She is waking 3-4 times a night, often hysterical, calling out for us and taking a while to calm down and resettle - needing one of us to stay with her. She is waking early in the morning and having generally rubbish day naps too - also waking v upset. It all feels like it's building to general over tiredness.

I'm guessing it's some sort of separation anxiety which I know is normal at her age but I'm struggling as to how to unpick it. I'm 7 months pregnant and co-sleeping just doesn't work for either of us, although I know it works for many!

Any tips for things that have worked for others?

DD is nearly 21 months and sleep has taken a definite nosedive recently. Main issue is suddenly massively protesting bedtime having previously been happily falling asleep when we put her down and left. Having been through the waking five times a night stage due to feeding to sleep when she was smaller, I refuse to get back into her relying on me to fall asleep so we're dealing with it basically by leaving her for ten mins then going in to comfort her, rinse and repeat. Never stay in until she falls asleep. Generally don't need to do it more than twice. She is still mostly sleeping through but sometimes waking, usually just needs a quick comfort and drink of water to go back to sleep so we're lucky there. It definitely feels related to separation anxiety, as well as general developmental stuff - speech coming on a lot recently. Oh also, we let her start taking her favourite teddy to bed which I thought was helping but today she has started chucking him out of the cot and then standing there howling 'where teddy?' so I might not do that tomorrow!

I followed this advice with both my DC at similar ages. I think the most important thing is to decide on your plan and stick to it for a good while to give it chance to work. You need to be happy and confident with whichever method you’ve decided on before you start, otherwise you’ll end up giving up when she’s upset.
