3 week old won’t settle at night

My 3 week old is pretty good at feeding, then settling to sleep during the day, even if I put him down in his cot or pram. but after midnight it’s a different story. He’ll feed well and often drop off at the breast, but as soon as I put him down he starts grumbling and sounding very uncomfortable - like he has a tummy upset.

is this normal? Any advice on what to do? I have a toddler who I have to look after in the morning and am struggling to cope on so little sleep!

Perfectly normal sounding to me. Their little tummies are still developing. Plus many babies just will not sleep on their own, on their back, especially at that age. It's very hard. Can your partner help out?

Yes, normal. I wish I listened when people told me this. I was so upset that my newborn daughter wouldn't settle. Although it did turn out that she had acid reflux and is now on gaviscon infant prescribed by the GP. She's now 12 weeks and only is up once during the night for a quick feed and then back down. Sleeps well during the day too. It really is so common for newborns to be fussy and not develop a sleeping pattern. You feel that you're going to rip your hair out with exhaustion. If you feel like his tummy is unsettled go straight to the GP. Good luck (and try and get some sleep ❤️)

Colic tears it's head then, do her legs 'bicycle?'
Wind as much as you're able and get infacol or gripe water if you think it's colic

Totally normal, their gut is still maturing. I've shared this article before on here, I found it really helpful to explain what is going on: mumsandbabies.com.au/news/how-can-i-help-my-babys-gut/?fbclid=IwAR2nD9tHTNkE-MPwyi5iOMttvcuA2uHxAifJuQPvGxL01BHKfrPk7m_W-MU

Thank you all. This is helpful to know. I hope he will improve with time.

strange thing is @hullabaloney , that he will happily sleep on his back in a cot or bassinet during the day. If it’s his gut or reflux then I can’t understand why it just happens at night?! Does anyone know?

It's a primitive behaviour to keep a caregiver close by during the 'dangerous' night hours.

Babies bodies are designed to live in a cave with predators roaming near by, their behaviour reflects this.
. Can recommend 'your baby skin to skin' book

This is totally normal.

Swaddling is great to help the baby feel safe and stop him jerking himself awake in the night.

All normal

Get a swaddle bag, they're great!
