twins who won't sleep in their cots during the day

I have 10 month old twins. They nap twice in the day between about 9.30 and 11am and then again for an hour at 1.30pm. The girl is extremely easy and will sleep anywhere, the boy is much harder to settle and I get only get him to sleep in the double buggy during the day. I put the buggy in the sitting room with a dark blanket over it and this works a treat very quickly. Because it is easier to settle both babies in the same place, they both sleep in the double buggy. I am aware that I need to just put them into their cots and close the doors (I have separated them) but for some reason this doesn't work for the boy and he ends up shouting/wining. Their rooms are not as dark as the double buggy. I am worried that I am creating problems for myself.

i dont think you are creating a problem in the long run... I have three DC now 7,2 & 4, they all had their daytime sleep in the pram or buggy. it made my life more flexible (esp when i went back to work and they went to CM or Granny) and later when it came to dropping the nap altogether (we're here with the two year old now) then it was a whole lot easier to replace, as the night-time routine is a different thing entirely.

Sounds like you are doing a fab job and the bonus of them napping in their buggy is that its portable. If you're worried that their room isnt dark enough just buy a black out blind and some dark curtains.

I don't see there is a problem here, you can get them both to sleep at the same time which is amazing and means you get a well earnt break!

Sounds like they have a great nap pattern - if they're sleeping well in teh buggy why change it?

sandyballs · 14/01/2008 13:51

I wouldn't worry. My twins never slept in their cots during the day, even when very tiny. They were always in the buggy or their little rocking seats.

Thanks for all your supportive replies. I guess the reason I am worried is when we go on holiday - we are in April - we won't have the double buggy with us so they'll have to nap in their cots which may be a problem. I do have black out blinds but they are not great. I need to buy curtains too.

Where are you going? How are you going to cope with two 10 month olds and no buggy .

Voj · 14/01/2008 14:56

Don't worry, we've got single buggies we'll be taking with us. I guess we will just use those.

I wouldn't try to change too much on hols, might make it a bit stressful for you. Just put the two single buggies together for a nap, they won't notice the difference hopefully.

gigglewitch · 14/01/2008 15:27

was thinking the same thing, sandy! just take a familiar blanket each and they'll just accept it as part of the 'holiday' thing!

Meeely2 · 14/01/2008 15:37

hi there, I have twin boys - at ten months i think i had only just started putting them upstairs for a nap, they would sleep where they fell generally before that. Its fab that you can get them to nap together, so don't fret about where they do it.

On hols they will be fine in single buggies - we first went away when ours were 5 months old to jersey and they were still pretty much sleeping all the time! we did have a double tandem them which did mean i could go out for walks without dh should the need arise.

Since then we have holidayed with my in laws and always taken single buggies as there was always more than one pair of hands on offer to help out. they never slept in cots/beds either during the day, always buggies, laps, sofas, floors!

As they get older you might find you can ask them if they are tired and they will say yes, and then you can take them upstairs to bed - i think when mine got to one, i was able to say mid morning, are you tired and they would crawl to the door to our stairs and i would take them up and they would sleep blissfully for 2 hours - was fab. However just as you get used to a new settled routine, something else crops up to ruin it - so just make the most of them sleeping AT ALL in the day!

Hi Voj - I am in exactly the same situation. My two (20 weeks) always nap in their buggy and I've been wondering them same thing. They seem to sleep fine side by side in their cot at night but when I've tried to get them to nap in it during the day they just wake each other up. Looks like we'll just stick with what works (i.e. the buggy!) at the moment until they are physically too big!

As others have said, the plus side is that if you need to nip out during 'nap time' then it's not a problem to take them with you!
