Any last tips for early morning wakings?

12.5 month old wakes 5.20am usually everyday

I've tried...

  • black out blinds
  • white noise
  • checking temp
  • less day sleep / more day sleep
  • changing nap times
  • later bedtime / earlier bedtime

You name it...

How long and how many naps?
At 14 months DD dropped a morning nap otherwise she was alive and kicking till midnight.

It’s not particularly early. I’d just take that

KangarooKenny · 10/06/2022 06:06

My only tip is for you to go to bed earlier. Hopefully the darker nights in winter will help them stay asleep longer.

My 2 year old has been getting up at 5:30 since the dawn of time (feels like). I also have a five year old who never sleeps past six.

It's a phase for some people but for others it's just their body clock. We've tried all the same things you have and it makes no difference to anything, the only time they stay asleep later is if they are ill.

You get used to it, now if I'm not up by six for some reason, I feel like half the day is wasted!

@PAFMO

2 naps

Has been 1 hour in morning (I've tried cutting this short too)

1.5 in afternoon.

Suddenly now he's only doing 45 mins in afternoon 🙃

@mistermagpie I'm starting to think it's just his body clock!

I’m afraid to say mine has always been early risers. We wake between 4 and 5:30 I’ve just adapted to it being the time we wake now. I’ve tried everything but it seems it’s just a natural thing for them.

foodislife1 · 10/06/2022 20:17

Mine has always got up between 4:40 and 5:30. We've tried everything under the sun and finally just accepted that he's just an early riser :)

bbqhulahoop · 10/06/2022 20:26

It's an age thing. You'll get preachy perfect mums on here telling you they put a load of effort into sleep training their baby and they now never wake before 10am but realistically 520 is pretty average based on the babies I know

Migraineroundthebend · 10/06/2022 20:29

Mines the same. Its just their body clock.

HJFTM · 10/06/2022 21:14

DD (13 months) has regularly woken around 5am as well as 4/5 wakes up 😫 this last week though, she’s had 1 or no wake ups and has slept until 6:30 ish. I’ve made no changes to her routine either!

She has 2 x 1hr 30 naps a day or sometimes the second nap has only been for 30mins.

I know it’s only been a week and I know this post doesn’t offer any advice as such but I just wanted to say that you’re doing all the right things and who knows if tonight is the night your child may start sleeping better! solidarity 💐💐

I also agree its a body clock thing.
My DS is crack of dawn child and even now as a tween never lies in at the weekend.
DD has always been a fantastic sleeper and never emerges from her room until after 9.30 am and shes in yr 2 at primary.

I despaired with my son at times. Drove myself crazy trying to unlock the secret. Nothing worked. A grow clock and teaching him to lay quietly helped. So that even though i was awake i could rest or read for 20 mins or so before heading down.

I think this is really typical in babies/toddlers aged about 10-15 months. There are tons of threads on here regarding early waking at that age.

Im sure for some its a body clock thing and no amount of tweaking will make a difference. I think the issue for a lot though is that two naps is too much but one isn’t enough. It’s a really tricky transition period that lots of people go through, us included. Consistently capping the morning nap at 20-30 minutes helped a bit. The fact the afternoon nap has shortened suggests your morning nap is too long as well. A

I’m afraid the only thing that fixed it for us though was dropping to one nap at about 15 months. 5:30 became more like 7 within the space of a week or so.
