Just curious whether anyone else thinks this is unusual. In laws children are epic sleepers - but always had very unusual nap times.

The 4 year old would still do a massive day time nap - like 3 hours.

The 20 month year does a big mid morning, followed by an afternoon nap from 3:30 to 5!

Unusual? Zero impact on their night sleep. This is really jealousy speaking, but they are crazily lucky right?

I've just got my 21-month old up at 6:30pm from a particularly late nap. Not worried - he always sleeps well. (Famous last words!) Wish his older brother still had mammoth naps sometimes but those days are long gone.

Wow. Makes me anxious just reading that!!

My DD now 8 was like this. My DM used to look after her and one day after work I asked how my DD had been that day and DM said ‘I don’t really know I’ve hardly seen her!’ She had slept 2 hours in the am and 3 in the pm. 😶She grew out of naps at the usual age but does love a lie in, I have to shake her awake at 730 for school.

Extremely lucky. My younger dc is like this. He's 15 months, sleeps 12 hours at night, then has either one or two naps totally approx 3 hours in the day. He loves sleeping 🤣
It's absolutely luck and nothing parents do makes much difference (imo!) my eldest was a nightmare sleeper, and middle dc pretty average, so..

Ragwort · 02/06/2022 18:58

My DS was like that, two very long naps ... then down at 7pm right through to 7am. Once or twice he actually slept right through from 3pm to 7am the next morning! I did follow GF routine and was fairly strict about napping in a quiet, dark room ... but I think it was just luck. Never had a second DC so nothing to compare Grin.

I looked after a toddler like that - 3 hrs nap from 12 - 3pm and still went down to bed at 7:30. My own children - all 9 of them....no way! After the age of 2 a thing after 1pm or more than 1hr had me worrying whether they'd go to sleep before 10pm! (I kid you not) but then they are mostly neurodiverse so maybe it's that?

BigBoudIsBack · 02/06/2022 19:13

Unicorns. Mine's 22m and has never slept through the night. He still needs a nap to get through the day but if he makes it to 90mins of nap it's a red letter day - and with or without it he's up every 2 hours.

CottonSock · 02/06/2022 19:13

Bloody lucky. Maybe they will have a 3rd child and revenge will be served

Cakeandslippers · 02/06/2022 19:17

Lol one of mine had stopped all naps by that age (20m) and the other was down to half an hour a couple of times a week. No sleeping through the night either.

My youngest is 22mo and he had a 1 minute danger nap a couple of weeks ago and bedtime moved from 8.30ish to 10.30 ish. 😅 such fun!

Ragwort · 02/06/2022 21:49

My DS was napping until he was about 3 Grin ... he used it go to play group in the morning, home for lunch, two hour afternoon nap and bedtime at 7pm (woke at 7am!).

RewildingAmbridge · 02/06/2022 22:03

DS had dropped naps by two, if he naps now even for half an hour in the car at any time of day, it totally screws up bed time (3.5). Even before he dropped naps we called anything past 3:30 the danger zone and would have to wake him from an afternoon nap, or he'd be awake until gone 10pm. He also didn't reliably sleep through until he was almost three. My brother was the same as a baby rarely napped was a terrible night sleeper, I slept through from weeks old, napped like a trooper and liked a good 12-14 hours over night where possible even as an older child. My DN (brother's child) still naps for two hours plus a day anytime, at 3.5 and sleeps a solid twelve hours a night without issue and has from less than 3 months.
Doesn't seem fair!

CustardGoodJamGoodMeatGood · 02/06/2022 22:22

DD (2.5yo) usually naps from 12ish to 2.30 but I usually have to wake her at that time, then she'll happily sleep 7.30 until 7.30, sometimes closer to 8.30 on days she doesn't have nursery

Deadringer · 02/06/2022 22:27

My older two were like that, they had long naps and slept at least 12 hours at night up to about age 4. Number three not so much, she slept well at night but didn't really nap at all.

MadameDragon · 02/06/2022 22:29

Both mine still napped at 4 and slept through the night 11h no problem, but they slept well because of the nap, not in spite of it. People in the UK drop the nap very early in comparison with other cultures.

SatinHeart · 02/06/2022 22:50

Yeah my DC1 was just like that at a similar age. Could nap till the cows come home and still go to bed fine

DC2's sleep on the other hand has always been (and still is) a horror show and I can't wait till the naps are no more!

Timeturnerplease · 04/06/2022 20:26

I always find it fascinating comparing notes about baby/toddler sleep. DD1 only ever napped for half an hour at a time, then dropped naps entirely by 20mo. It was then that she finally slept through, but she’s still up with the birds regardless of bedtime. DD2 10mo is an equally rubbish sleeper.

A friend’s son had a 3.5 hour afternoon nap right up until the day he started school AND slept 7-7. If she could bottle whatever caused that, she’d make a fortune.
