Remedies for Blocked Noses for Little Sleepers ?

DD is 14 months and we are all lucky in that she is having her first cold with runny nose for about 11 months. Since I have not had to deal with the problem before, what can I do to help the poor little lamb to be able to breathe and sleep ? I have just given her some some Paracetomol, but as I am writing this I am horrified that I may have given her the medicine unnecessarily.

Any suggestions from wise MN's ?

we use karvol pug ins -but on a timer so it comes on and off throughout night (Otherwise is too strong IMO and has to be changed too often). Also put cushion under head end of matress - but she moves around so much it's often her feet that get raised up!

The paracetamol will probably make her feel much better - you what that horrid cold feeling is like. I'd say raise her matress as well - that seems to work wonders. Has she got a cot bumper or something you could tie onto the cot with karvol drops or vicks on - i always do this for dd in a place where she cant get it on her but then the vapours are around her through the night. Hope she feels better soon x

i'd heard to use medised as it dries up the mucus. although i'd use it sparingly at night and then let it all come out during the day as i'm sure it's meant to come out for a reason!

Lonelymum · 23/11/2004 13:20

We are never without a bottle of Karvol, though I believe you shouldn't use it more that 3 nights in a row

karvol here too. i use the cpasuls, one/evening put the liquid on a cloth which I tie to one of the bed's legs.
paracetamol does nothing for runny noses from what i know.
if she has a blocked nose use some saline drops (nothing else)but sparingly.
there are 2 issues with nose drps (the ones for adults not so much the saline drops) in that in sensitises the inside of the nose. there are some tiny things inside the nose (cannot remember teh proper term)which filter the air we breathe in. when using nasal drops, these become irritated and may also not function properly. with prolongued use they stop working to their full potential and the person in question becomes more suscceptible to catching colds etc because what they breathe in through their nose does not get cleaned as it should be.But this is an adult issue.
With children and blocked noses, if the problem persists, they get conjunctivitis in their eye because the ducts (again I never know the excat terms etc, sorry) become blocked.
HTH as a general idea.

Saline solution squirted up the nose. Get it from the pharmacy.

Use it the first time she stirs at night then prop her on a pillow to go back down

YOui many know that some of us have been know to suck out snot from our kids noses. God bless us.

Try putting her in a steamy room for a while and then using a nasal aspirator to suck all the gung out.

fastasleep · 23/11/2004 13:31

Ooh thank god I'm not the only snot-sucker out there!

Kayleigh · 23/11/2004 13:31

I also used karvol tied to one of dh hankies near the cot at night, and a dose of medised.

Kayleigh · 23/11/2004 13:32

Euuuggghhhhhh re snot sucking. I'm eating my lunch here.

A well known no-drug solution to clear blocked nose......
Place a crushed clove of garlic in a in some oil in a saucer and place on a radiator to infuse. Remove the garlic, then massage the oil into the feet, pop on a pair of socks and let it do it's magic. After a while the mucus will come pouring out!!! It worked for my DD and has worked for lots of others too!

mrsmiawallace · 23/11/2004 20:37

didnt have any plug ins last time dd poorly, so i spooned a large dollop of snuffle babe(vicks) into an old bowl and added some boiling water...it worked wonders!!!and much cheaper than plug in.hth

Medised. Definately. Once you've tried it you'll wonder how you survived without. It's paracetomol + an antihistamine, which dries up snot and causes slight drowsiness.
