How much daytime sleep at 10 months?

DS has hardly slept for the last couple of months because of teething. He normally has approx 2h sleep a day: 30 mins am, 90 mins lunchtime. But lately he's been hard to settle at lunchtime, and a couple of times he's had a shorter nap in the afternoon instead, and seems to have slept better at night. Yesterday he had 30 mins am + 30 mins pm, and slept almost 12 hours last night, despite teething PLUS a cold! Suspect this is a freak occurrence however, and don't know if it's related to the naps. Today I tried skipping the morning nap - he wasn't happy about that so I won't be doing it again, but he had 2hours at lunchtime and is now proving impossible to settle - again, don't know if this is nap-related or pain or what.

Just wondered whether to try the 30+30 thing again - but an hour doesn't seem like enough - ?

Left to his own devices I think he'd have an hour and a half to 2 hours in the morning, but then I'd have no idea when/whether to put him down in the afternoon - he's not very good at giving warning signs when he's tired ....

my ds (almost 9mo) has very changeable nap times too. Nothing seems to impact on his am waking time tho - usually 4.30-5am ish.
We had friends staying at w/end and I put mine down for the same naps as hers ie 2 hrs after waking for an hour or so and then for another hour or so around 3pm.
Today he slept from 5am till 8.20 and has just gone down for his first nap at 1pm. Don't know how long he'll sleep for - hopefully for 2 hrs.
He is quite good with his sleepy signals - rubbing his ear and being grumpy. But I still need to stroke his eyes to sleep each time.

My second one naps for two lots of 40 minutes, to the minute every day if he's in his routine.

What times are the 2 naps, suzywong?

Let him have 25 mins this morning but once again he wouldnt go down after lunch. Eventually had 30 mins at about 1.45. Got very irritable late afternoon but then perked up again at teatime, which was odd.

Am going to try giving him the shortest of catnaps tomorrow morning and see what happens at lunchtime.

DS2 has first nap 9.45 and second nap at 1.45

If you can, I think you should go with his flow for three days, he may be wanting to change his nap times but doesn't know how to.

If you don't have a DD or any other kids to take up your time it may well pay off to do things his way until he has settled in to a new routine.

My DD (10 months) normally wakes in the morning at 6.30ish and then goes down at 9.30ish for a nap. That can be either 40 minutes (never less than that) or up to 1.5 hrs. She then has another nap later on and goes down depending on when she got up from her morning nap.
So today she actually didn't go to sleep until 10.15 am (she woke up at 7.30 this morning) and woke at 11.30 and then she went back to sleep at 3pm and woke at 4.30pm. She then went to bed at 7.20 pm.

With DS I was obsessed with routines and was an avid Gina Ford follower. With DD I follow her cues .... she does all the rubbing of eyes and generally grumpy thing ...

I reckon 3 hours is the maximum sleep she has in a day ... but some days she can have 2 lots of 40 minutes.

suzy & ghosty, you're right - I'm going to sit back and let him show me his new routine. Too much effort to do anything else! Thanks
