White Noise Machine - Husband hates it!

Any advice on ways we can wean a 2 year old off white noise? I slept trained DD with white noise at 6 months and have used it ever since.

She's a very light sleeper sometimes so I dare not take it away. Esp since we have DS on the way about to be born.

DH just doesn't get why we need it and thinks she needs to get used to sounds of the house.

Happy to take advice or be told I'm wrong, but if it works... it works IMO.

Should I wean her off it? And if so any suggestions how?

No experience, but I would keep it for now if you have a new baby about to be born. Wait till the new little one is mostly sleeping through or at least not crying much at night.

Hugasauras · 19/04/2022 13:05

Is there any need to wean off? Plenty of adults use white noise too! I often use it.

I can’t believe you are even thinking about disrupting your DDs sleep when you are imminently about to have a newborn! If your DH dislikes it so much, it can be his project to wean her off it whilst you are busy with the baby Grin My SIL stopped the white noise with her eldest two when they had both fully stopped napping and generally were exhausted by bedtime so slept deeply. I won’t be touching 2 year old DS’ white noise for a long time to come!

If I had my way DH would be in a straight jacket and sedated to stop him making the baby waking noises that the machine is there to drown out.

But yeah, I did say he's welcome to change what he likes if he's good to manage the transition away from it.

He didn't keep arguing after that.

I remember this conversation. I started using white noise when lo was a couple of months old. My oh had to vacate the bedroom as he couldn't stand it, well bye i said to him.

Personally, I would keep it; my lo still sleeps to it now, and I can't sleep without it either now. She's a light sleeper. She shares a room with her older sibling, who's 12, and she loves it, saying it sends her off to sleep straight away as she's always found it difficult to drop off.

MoorGirl · 19/04/2022 20:04

I think everything said previously is correct - keep it for now. Lots of changes coming. But, when you do decide to get rid, we did so by just reducing the volume a little each day. It was surprisingly easy. All the best with the impending arrival!

I hate white noise. We use pink or brown noise here. It's so much softer. Perhaps your husband may prefer a different frequency?

We use a machine that plays sounds of the ocean. We live literally near the sea because DH loves the sea so f*ck know why he's got an issue with it.

I think it's because he woke her up while I was asleep early and doesn't want to admit to the crime and is instead focusing on the machine sounds.

My 2 still play Ewan the dream sheep to fall asleep at 5 and 7 years old!
They're in their own rooms, so it doesn't bother me unless they're in my bed due to being poorly. I can't bare it!!!

TheGlitterFairy · 19/04/2022 20:47

God my DH keeps turning the white noise down while DS is napping - drives me mad. I’d say keep with it for now and wait til the new baby is here and all is well before taking it away!! Like the idea of PP about the big it down a bit gradually (thank you!!)

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 19/04/2022 20:49

We still use white noise with our two year old. Expecting a baby in September and will continue to use it for DS and buy another machine for baby!

DH can use earplugs

Youngman1267 · 19/04/2022 20:53

We weaned our daughter off it about age 2 and then her baby brother was born. He screamed every night for the next 8 months so we re introduced it pretty quickly. She's about to turn 6 and still uses it. From my experience I'd keep it!

FrydayFish · 19/04/2022 21:12

I never knew that there was different colours of noise.

tealandteal · 19/04/2022 21:14

My DS is 4 and still has it although at the moment it is bird song which stops the real birds from waking him up. Why rock the boat if it works?

TheFairyCaravan · 19/04/2022 21:20

I wouldn’t mess about with it if it helps her sleep, tbh, especially as you’re about to have another baby. You’re going to be wanting as much sleep as you can get aren’t you?

When I can’t sleep, I ask Alexa to play white noise. It sends me off in no time. I think it lasts for an hour, however I’m never awake long enough to find out.
