13 month early wakes

Probably been done to death. I have an older early riser. Which is fine. Happy to get up early. However, my 13 month old is waking anywhere from 430 onwards. He is very upset when he wakes. I lie in his room to get him back to sleep but this takes a while. He is teething so I'm wondering if a bit of calpol at this time might help? He's waking up early and then having a nap a few hours after getting up. So I know he's tired. Not sure what to do.

What's nap time and bedtime?

AliceW89 · 18/04/2022 13:57

Is he on two naps a day or one? When do you do the nap(s) and when is bedtime?

It won’t be the same for everyone, but dropping from two naps to one at about 14 months cured early starts within two weeks. It was an awful two weeks as he was so tired and grumpy by nap time, but it was so much better after that.

Having 1st nap 2h after waking is normal and what's expected. Nothing to do with waking early.

Early waking likely means either not enough sleep over 24h resulting in restless over tiredness. Or bedtime too early

Well he is still having two naps though sometimes misses the afternoon nap. Normally start bedtime at 630 so asleep for 7. But if he's missed last nap then I put him to bed earlier and asleep by 630-645.
He just seems tired at get up. I've tried a later dinner time in case he was hungry but that didn't seem to make a difference.

First nap is normally about nine and second nap about 2 ish

I'd go for a much later bedtime - 8.00-8.30pm. Overnight sleep in the range of 10h-12h is normal. So a 7pm bedtime could give you a perfectly reasonable 5am wake up time.

Also - if you're getting a 5am wake up and first nap not until 9am - that's a very long wake window and is likely setting baby up overtired from the start if the day.

Fates advice is always great, and I'm glad to see you back, Fate! What we do for my 13-month-old, which works for us.

7am to 715am up.
730am to 745am breakfast
9am toast, yoghurt, whatever, really.
930am pop for a nap. Max sleep time 45 minutes. We do this because she won't go for an afternoon nap or has an extremely short one. Or wants to sleep past 5 pm. Which doesn't work for us. So generally awake by 1030am at the latest. As if she sleeps as long as she likes here, then she will be overtired by bedtime, then wakes at 430am crying like your lo.
1030am to 11am snack. Cheese, biscotti anything again, really.
1230pm. lunch.
115pm pop down for a sleep. Asleep by 130pm.
330pm awake.
330pm to 4pm snack
530pm dinner.
630pm snack
715pm milk
730pm milk and bed
8pm asleep.

My lo has lots of snacks. She's very tall for her age and on the highest percentile for height and weight, in 2 - to 3-year-old clothing almost as i need the length. Also, she's going through a hunger moment due to being ill for a month. Bless her.

I know a lot of Los your baby's age do
9am to 11am nap or 930am till 11 am nap
Then 2 pm till 330 pm nap

Is it light in the room?
Lo cold?
Hungry?

How long is lo sleeping at 9am?

iloveyankeecandle · 18/04/2022 21:15

Room is very very dark. I don't think he's hungry.
I think you might be right about the early bedtime to be honest. He seems to do ten hours fine. I might give it a go over the rest of the week and see what happens.

Any changes can take up to 3 weeks before seeing a difference

Good luck and let use know how u get on x

iloveyankeecandle · 19/04/2022 07:24

@ChittyBang1987 thank you. He had a late nap yesterday as we went out. So he didn't fall asleep until 715 and woke up at six this morning. But still had frequent wake ups.

How does lo go sleep? I give a short cuddle along with a sing and put my lo fully awake in cot.

iloveyankeecandle · 19/04/2022 08:50

@ChittyBang1987 we have bath, stories then into cot. He's waking quite often in the night but I'm
Not sure if it's his teeth?

OP posts:
iloveyankeecandle · 19/04/2022 08:51

@ChittyBang1987 he's fully asleep. He has a moan and then calms down and then falls asleep.

ChittyBang1987 · 19/04/2022 09:00

May just be stirring in sleep cycles, perhaps?

iloveyankeecandle · 19/04/2022 09:54

@ChittyBang1987 I did wonder that. It seems to be every few hours
