3 week old wakes every hour and trapped wind

Hi All,

Looking for some advice/help/support

My partner and I welcomed our little girl 3 weeks ago and for the first 1.5 weeks she slept ok (well what you can expect in a newborn - fine in the day, night times 2-3 hours between feeds with solid sleep). However, for the last 1.5 weeks from around 5-6pm it all goes downhill. She will cry and be in obvious pain with wind (arching back, red face etc). We try to settle her with lots of feeding and she will usually go down around 9-10pm. However from around 12-1am she will wake every hour, be awake for an hour between feeds, cry out and fuss when we put her down. It has really started to wear us down :(
We believe she has trapped wind/colic as she will not burp. Per day she may burp 1-2 times max despite us trying ALL the positions/techniques and keeping her upright after feeds. We use anti colic Mam bottles, c&g comfort, infacol and have just started to use colief. However this has not helped and by 1am you can see the pain she is in with the wind and her stomach becomes hard and enlarged. We really are struggling and the prospect of it being like this until she is 4-6months is really daunting!

Help!

Hi, we had the same with our little one and it turned out he had acid reflux. He was soo much more settled in the evening after taking his medication in the morning. Doctors kept missing it and so did the hospital initially as we knew something wasn't right with him. It took nearly 3 months of him constantly crying before he was finally diagnosed. It was only after I mentioned he hates laying down on his back that they gave us the medication. Might be worth pushing that

Thank you we will discuss this with the gp as we have thought this also

Have you tried a slight incline in his sleep surface ... if you have a next to me you can raise the top end an extra notch , this helped my LO sleep abit better

DD1 was the same. It was silent reflux. We videoed what we were talking about to the show the GP after being fobbed off repeatedly. It got us the referral and medication.

Hi
Agree it sounds like reflux, however might also be worth looking at cows milk protein allergy. My baby got sent to hospital at 3 weeks old by GP as she was screaming in pain and her tummy was swollen. Turned out she needed prescription formula and omeprazole for reflux, she’s a different baby now.

Our cot had leg raisers you could add to one end to put baby on an incline but it didn’t really help.
In the end it turned out he needed to trump, and apparently really small babies struggle to do this. They sound insane but I swear by these

The relief for baby is instant and after a few weeks screaming I was willing to try anything!!! X

This can be CMPA, reflux, silent reflux, lactose intolerance, or quite simple over tiredness. You would be amazed how much sleep a 3 week old actually needs and tiny babies usually look like they are in pain when they are crying from tiredness. The hard tummy is often from swallowing air when they cry. Max awake time at 3 weeks should be 1 hr.

Hi OP. Going through something identical with our 3 week old. Did you get to the bottom of what was going on?
