Best bed to buy for a newborn....?

With three months to go I'm trying to get my baby shopping done. I'm getting very confused over what type of bed to get for the baby's first few months, before he goes into a cot. Would like to keep him in the room with me for a few months, and I'm intending to breastfeed.

Options are:

  • Moses basket, maybe with a rocking base (but lots of people have said these are a bit of a gimmick and babies don't like to sleep in them!)
  • Bedside cot, like this one

www.mamasandpapas.co.uk/product-3243028/type-i/

(but how do I know he won't fall through the crack with the bed?)

  • Amby baby hammock (seems quite pricey, but willing to pay if it works)
  • Just using the carrycot from the Bugaboo Chameleon I've bought

I don't really want to co-sleep as I'd be worried about rolling over in the night.

Any ideas please on what works best, don't want to buy something and end up not using it...

(posted this on pregnancy thread too, in case anyone reading both!)

I had a moses basket

the stand went in my room and then I could carry the baby about in it during the day eg they could have naps in the living room where I could see them

I'd say cheapy moses basket and a stand, because it's handy to move round the house with you when the baby is teeny.

Bedside cots are way expensive but I suppose if you're going to buy a big cot for her to go in eventually you might as well get one that does bedside too. (and traditionally one stuffs the tiny gap between the matresses with blankets or towels).

Carrycot is a nice idea till you get caught in the rain and it is still soggy at bedtime...

My DS is 10wo and before he was born I always swore I wouldn't co-sleep... wish I'd bought a bedside cot! (thankfully he's back in his basket again now). We bought a cheap moses basket and it has been useful although he's nearly growing out of it so we'll have to bring the cot in our room soon anyway. I certainly wouldn't spend much on the basket (maybe try ebay or local paper - you can always buy a new mattress) oh and I also wish we had got a rocking stand for it, much easier than shaking the whole flipping thing like we have to every night! not sure about the hammock, haven't seen them before

Moses basket was too wobbly for dd - just seemed to annoy her. So she slept in a carrycot.
When ds was born I bought a global bedside crib (as we already had a cot). It was absolutely brilliant. I rolled very tightly a blanket to bridge the small gap between the crib mattress and the bed mattress (but wouldn't be so noticeable between a divan bed and the crib). Had no problems whatsoever with it, and it felt great to be so close, but to have enough room at the same time.

Amby hammock - helps baby sleep and you can use it as a travel cot. Ds has slept well in his

amby

They sell them on ebay too.
