6 month old slamming legs all through night

Around 4 months DS started lifting his legs straight up in air (90 degrees from body) then letting them drop, while he is in cot during the night. Probably happened around 5-10 times a night.

The last week hes been doing it most of the night but seems to be slamming them down now. When I check on him his eyes are still shut. Its really noisy and keeping me awake.

I could put him in his own room now he's turned 6 months but hes quite a restless sleeper and can't find his own dummy and put it back in yet. So I would be up and down doing this and I'd rather just do it from my bed. And im not quite ready to put him in his room yet.

I know I'm not going to be able to stop the leg thing but did anyone else's baby do this? Did it stop after a period of time?

And does anyone know why they hes doing this?

Thanks

This is really normal! To the point on tik tok there was a trend of parents copying it with the caption "how to sleep like a baby" Grin I don't know how you stop it tbh, I think you just have to ride it out. As I remember, dc1 just got bored with doing it and it was quite a short-lived phase. Dc2 started sleeping on his front as soon as he learnt to roll over (I always put him down on his back) and that stopped the leg dop quite effectively!

We had this too. It'll pass! X

I'm not on tiktok. Good to know its a common thing :)

I hope its short lived. I think i got more sleep when he was a newborn!!

My second baby did this. It was a self-soothing thing. I missed it when he got too big to do it, which won't be too far off for you either.

Yes my baby did this as did most if not all my friends babies. Stopped once they got a bit more mobile and could shuffle differently in the cot.

Did this stop? Currently having the same thing 😫

Both my children did this when getting themselves to sleep. Strange but I had read it was a soothing thing???
I think they stopped doing it around 1yo.

My nearly 6 month old has started doing this recently! Last night he did from Bedtime at 9 through to midnight, woke at 1 and 3 started kicking at 3am and was still going at 5am... finally gave in and put him in with us and he slept for a bit sadly I didn't as couldn't relax. Any tips on how to stop this welcome as we need sleep! Ps he's still in moses basket in our room as now quite 6 months yet but definitely getting too big for it now!

Does this stop, my nearly 7 month old waking up lifting legs nearly all night... I'm so tired. He is content babbling away to himself

My son is going through this at the minute he’s my 4th baby and is the only one who has done this! He’s nearly 6 months old and it’s driving me insane haha! Hoping he stops doing it soon as it makes a loud banging all night, I'm hoping it’s not keeping my neighbours up too as our walls are thin 😂

Shyrianz · 15/08/2024 21:16

my LO does this too, he’s almost 5 months old and does it when he’s about to fall asleep or when he wakes up to go back to sleep.

I assume he is self soothing but glad to see I’m not the only one.

he really slams them down aggressively lol

Hi everyone. I'm in the exact same boat
My 4th month old was a sound sleeper, some nights we were getting up to 11 hours sleep. Then out of nowhere....bam! Pardon the pun. My god she's tossing and turning all night and lifting her legs and SLAM!
It's so bad some nights it wakes her, we have to settle her by rubbing her arms and legs.
Is it this bad for anyone else? Or has anyone else seen the light at the end of the tunnel? It's nothing to worry about is it?

My son does this. He is three months old and really slams down hard. I thought it might be wind as he seems to blow off after doing it for some time! Not sure if this helps anyone. I tend to gently rub his belly a bit or do the cycling leg pushes if he is doing the slamming incessantly and it really does help stop him but this could be a coincidence! I wouldn't worry as babies are just trying out all their new moves all the time and it apparently is a very common occurrence :)

Does it get better and how haha? From a very sleep deprived Mummy.

Mine does this to get herself to sleep and has done for a few months. It's so loud but now I realised it seems to be a comfort thing. Sounds similar if your baby is asleep whilst doing it. It's affectionately known as whale-taling!

MumOfGabriel · 14/11/2025 08:51

It really does get better! It must just be another development thing as he just stopped doing it one day!

And just a note from one tired mum to another, I thought my baby would never ever sleep without me/nursing, but he is 13 months now and some nights sleeps all the way through on his own, so don't be like me and worry sick about sleep. It really does all work out eventually! Just sleep when you can while you wait for the easier days Xx
